1951 Mercedes-Benz 170S

v1

The Mercedes-Benz W136 was a car that started production, took a little break for something called World War II, then started back up production and carried on its merry way. This 1951 170S for sale in California is a car that was on the post-war production side of things and surprisingly it still something you can drive everyday if you really wanted. (I do not recommend driving a W136 everyday.) Despite being a 1930s design, under the skin was a relatively modern design with independent suspension and a top speed that could hang with highway traffic — although firmly in the right lane.

v4

This 1951 170S is a wonderful example of a survivor that can still be enjoyed without much guilt. It’s not perfect but will still steal the show anywhere you take this car. The exterior presents fairly well while the interior is where this car really shines. The deep red leather seats looks great while the dash and all it’s surrounding gauges and knobs show examples of excellent craftsmanship. The 170S is also a sunroof car which is a wonderful feature as it spans the majority of the roof. Under the hood, a single Solex carburetor pumps out 52 horsepower that can get you up to about 75 mph if you are feeling rebellious, but like I said, it’s going to be a struggle to stay there.

Values on the four door W136 have been rising over the years. Although not as desirable as the coupe, a nice driver that needs some some minor work usually sells around the $15,000 mark. Seeing as this car is probably one of the best out there that’s not on a Concours level, I wouldn’t be surprised for it to sell over $30,000 given it’s condition and seeing as it looks like the owner knows his way around a vintage Mercedes or four.

Hmmmm..might be a 190 not a 300SL….looks too big to be a 190 but it might just be the angle of the front end……..

That’s a 190SL and the car under the cover looks like a Testarossa.
