1956 Volkswagen Beetle

Last week we looked at a variety of vintage, air-cooled Volkswagens, with one very important model conspicuously missing from the lineup: the Beetle. We’ll make up for lost time this Monday with this 1956 Oval Window Beetle for sale in Michigan. This brightly colored example is sporting a twin carbureted 1800 cc engine and a 12 volt electric system conversion, sitting on chrome wheels with Porsche style hubcaps. With some period correct details, this People’s Car pulls off a very rich look with a price to match.

It’s no secret there’s a lot of modified Beetles out there, but few really grab my attention. Many times the modifications aren’t period correct or they are just way too over the top. Much like this car’s US contemporary, the 1955 through 1957 Chevrolet, there’s a lot of ways you could go with modifying one of these cars to your liking. I’m a big fan of the chrome wheels with Porsche crest hubcaps and even though I don’t particularly like yellow, I could live with this color. Accessories like the headlight guards are a nice, subtle touch and the custom upholstery compliments the exterior color nicely. I was taken aback by the price on this Beetle at first, and after checking Hagerty, it looks like my shock wasn’t too misplaced, as they are listing the top end of the range for a 1956 Oval Window to be around $25,000. At well over $30,000, this Beetle could be a tough sell.
