1968 Volkswagen Beetle

$_4 (1)

At the beginning of the month, we took a look at a restored 1969 Volkswagen Beetle that almost seemed a bit over restored, given this car’s original intention as basic transportation for the people. Now comes along another restored Beetle of similar vintage, this time a 1968 example in Sahara Beige. If the aforementioned Diamond Blue Beetle was a bit over the top for your tastes and OEM is your thing, you’ll want to scope out this Bug.

This VW sedan was originally sold in Southern California, and lived most of its life here in Orange County. It has undergone a ground-up restoration to return it to it’s original condition and beauty. The quality two-stage repaint is the original Sahara Beige. The engine is restored like the original single port 1600cc, not matching numbers, but all correct for 1968. Complete new interior from the carpet to the headliner. This boasts the original Sapphire IV AM VW radio and new original steering wheel. All new window rubbers, chrome and windshield were installed. Rebuilt motor, transmission, brake system and suspension. New battery, wipers, hubcaps, all rubbers, fender beading, running boards, H4 headlights and rear tail light lenses. Everything works, drives and smells like a new 1968 Beetle from Germany.

Having grown up with a ’67 Beetle, I always have a bit of nostalgia when looking over a Bug from this era. They are simple and honest cars and make me yearn for a time when you could wrench on your car without breaking out a 500 page shop manual. Unlike a lot of other classics, Beetles have stayed relatively affordable. This example is priced at the top of the market for what you’d expect to pay for a 1968 Beetle, but it certainly a minter. Anytime something in beige like this grabs your attention, you know its worth a second look.
