1968 Volkswagen Type 3 Fastback

After the end of World War II and most of Germany in rubble, the Volkswagen factory was handed over to the British by the Americans. The factory was meant to be dismantled and shipped to Britain, but no manufacturer was interested in taking on the project. Thus, Volkswagen remained in Germany and went on to become the automotive power house that it is today. Ironic, then, as most of the British motor industry has been gutted. Funny how fate works.

In an effort to expand their lineup past the Type 1 Beetle, Type 14 Karmann Ghia and Type 2 Bus, Volkswagen introduced the Type 3, available as a two-door notchback or station wagon, or, as we see here, a two-door fastback. The fastback was the last of the Type 3 series to arrive on the scene, at the same time the 1.6 liter engine appeared. This Type 3 fastback for sale in Arizona comes with its original California black plates and is another one of those vintage air-cooled Volkswagens that gets the look just right in dark green with aftermarket Empi style wheels.

This is one of the nicest fastbacks I have seen in years. The cars underside is original and in excellent condition. Interior: The interior of this VW is in great condition and classicly simple!!! The interior was reupholstered a few years ago and still looks great. It retains a factory fresh appearance with correct materials for carpeting, seats and even retains the correct steering wheel. The dash is very simple and straight forward. All of the knobs and controls have been replaced and are all in great working order. The area behind the back seats was also carpeted making for a very nicely upholstered trunk compartment. The dash is free of cracks etc. Overall, I would say that the interior is in excellent shape!

Engine: The 1600cc engine has been given a recent tune up and starts up and runs like a top!!! The engine fires right up and blowns no smoke on start up or while driving. The engine is fed by two carbs and really moves the car along quite well. The transmission shifts through all of the gears with ease. The car rides, steers and stops GREAT! There’s not a lot I can find fault with on this Type 3. The chrome on the top of the rear bumper looks a bit tired and the side view mirrors appear to be mismatched, but that’s reaching. A good original or restored Type 3 will typically run you somewhere between $9,000 to $14,000. Notchbacks can bring a bit more cash at times, mostly due to the fact that they weren’t originally sold in the US. I’d say we’re not far off the mark with the asking price here. This car should get a lot of the air-cooled devotees to stand up and take notice.
