1969 Porsche 912 Targa

I have been looking for a 912 to feature for awhile now, but most of them have appeared worn out and tired. That’s never too surprising given that, as Porsche’s entry-level model, the 912 was a car that was bought and driven until it needed replacing. They were hardly garage queens or collectibles. So you can imagine my excitement when not only did I come across one that looked in rather nice condition, but it’s in a fantastic color AND a Targa! We rarely see a 912 Targa and while the market can be somewhat indifferent toward the Targa in general they’re always an interesting sight. Here we have a Lemon Yellow 1969 Porsche 912 Targa, located in California, with 134,600 miles on it. Like for the 911, in 1969 Porsche shifted the rear wheels by 57mm in order to extend the wheel base of the 912 and provide better balance to the rear-engined chassis. 1969 was to be the last year of 912 production as it was being replaced by the 911T, and while it would briefly reappear for the US market in 1975 as the 912 E for the most part it is these early models that capture our attention.

1969 Porsche 912 Targa for sale from Left Coast Classics. Original, unmolested California car with one repaint of it’s original, special order color, Lemon Yellow, zitronengelb, (Canary Yellow) and purportedly just 134K original miles. Both original California-issue black and gold license plates present. Believed to be a three owner car. Current owner bought around a decade ago. The interior looks to be completely original including seat belts, carpet, upholstery, panels and dash. Car has original glass around sides and rear. Rock solid floors, trunk and infrastructure; good panel alignments and no known body work except a trace amount of filler on the lower front portion of the driver door. Car starts; runs and drives well with straight steering, good braking and smooth shifting. The 80’s called and wanted their bra back so when we removed it we noticed the paint to be a tad shinier where the bra had been. While present, barely noticeable. Very straight and original 912. Fine to drive as-is or certainly worthy of restoring to new condition at the rate these cars continue to appreciate. Porsche produced nearly 30,000 912 coupe units and about 2500 912 Targa body style units.

The 912 hasn’t shown quite the surge in value as the 911, even if values have increased, but as they become more and more rare we’re starting to see excellent examples command pretty good money. There is a lot to like about the 912 we see here and with a little bit of restoration it could certainly make for a nice investment. The paint looks in very good shape and while the seats appear to need some work the rest of the interior looks clean and in otherwise fair shape. With an asking price of $39,800 this is definitely toward the high end for an unrestored car, but with bidding already at $30,100 I imagine this will ultimately end up with a sale. If your goal is to have an early-model air-cooled Porsche to enjoy the 912 is very difficult to beat on value and this one has the added bonus of potential appreciation down the road.

I am fascinated by targas, and I am not interested in the 912 particularly, But the color just pops on this one. I like it a lot.
