1970 Mercedes-Benz 280SE Cabriolet

For those of us in the Northeast US who don’t enjoy warm weather year round, the question begins to be thrown about as we approach the Memorial Day holiday: “where do you summer?” Well, for me, it would be less of a question of where rather than what do I do it in. If I had my way, it would be in one of these classics, the Mercedes-Benz 280SE Cabriolet. These grand touring machines have skyrocketed in value over the past few years, and it’s no surprise, as they are some of the last truly hand-built Mercedes-Benzes, from a bygone era. This 1970 example for sale in New York is convenient for those about to hit the Hamptons this coming weekend.

1970 Mercedes-Benz 280SE Cabriolet. Mercedes #DB843 Moss Green Metallic with Green leather interior, Green carpeting and Black cloth top, Becker Radio, Power Windows, Behr factory air conditioning, 2.8 liter inline 6-cylinder, Automatic transmission.

This USA delivered 280 SE Cabriolet is 1 of only 200 6-cylinder low-grille Cabriolets manufactured. It has been collector owned and cared for by several well-known enthusiasts over the past years. It received a bare metal repaint in 2008, shortly thereafter it received an interior retrim and wood veneer refinishing.

Recently, this 280 SE Cab. received an full servicing by a well known marque specialist. It is superb throughout with cold air conditioning. On a recent 100+ miles trip, the 280 performed flawlessly.

This 280 is complete with original books, records and ownership history. It is in exceptional condition throughout and ready for immediate use and enjoyment.

While this 280SE doesn’t have the larger, 3.5 liter V8 engine, the 2.8 liter injected inline-6 is perfectly adequate, as these cars are more about cruising than outright performance. Moss Green over green leather may not be to everyone’s taste, but it certainly is a departure from the usual silvers, blacks and blues we see on these Cabriolets. The very best 280SE Cabriolets, inclusive of the 3.5 V8 model, are pulling north of $200,000. Given this is a six cylinder in good condition, anywhere in the $150,000 to $180,000 is about right, placing this one at the upper end of that range.
