1972 Opel Manta Rallye

I have a secret automotive fetish. I’d day fetish is a really strong word, but I’m not sure how else to describe it, because admitting it makes me feel a bit dirty. I actually like the third generation early 1970s Chevrolet Nova. Now, I realize that admitting the problem is the first step towards rectifying the issue, but there’s this nagging feeling in the back of my mind that it won’t go away. I’m not even sure why, but some of those late 60s/early 70s GM muscle cars just look…well, cool to me. The GTO Judge, the Chevelle SS, the Nova SS – they just look right in a weird and slightly disturbing way. So to redeem myself, instead of owning one of them, I’d probably sport for a much more rare scaled down model from their European cousin, Opel. Just as the Opel GT was a 3/4 scale Corvette, Opel had a mini muscle car too in the Manta, and U.S. customers had the option of the Manta Rallye that kicked thing up a notch:

1972 OPEL MANTA RALLYE

Up for Auction is my 1972 Flame red (Orange) Opel Manta, original California blue plate car.

Runs and looks good. Very rust free car except for one spot, the driver side rear lower fender area (pics included) everything else is very rust free.

The car was resprayed the original color some years ago and NO rust is present other than the one noted area.

I have pictures of the areas where there are dings/dents in paint. Overall paint is ok, no trim was removed on the respray so a little over spray is present but is a very presentable driver. A few minor paint chips on edges of hood/cowl area.

Black interior is original and in good overall condition, headliner is excellent, door panels good, dash is cracked but I have another dash that will go with the car. Seats are ok but will need new foam as the springs are coming up through.

Mileage shows a little over 80,200 not sure if actual or not.

Glass all good. I have Manta badge for trunk lid but it needs to be installed, also it needs plastic clips to install driver side chrome fender trim. ( I just hung them on for pics).

I have the original goodyear polyglass spare.

I also have a couple boxes of misc. parts, distributors, original twin exhaust tip, dash cap etc.

I was told when I bought it that the original engine was replaced with another 1972 engine, I cant confirm but block id stamp is; 19S-082-7537

Great daily driver just needs some carb adjusting or? It starts, runs, idles, brakes, shifts great but at higher revs it hesitates a little.

I will have some you tube videos up of the car starting, driving in a few days, search youtube; templeton 1972 opel manta.

Title is clear and on non-op so NO back fees.

Please bid ONLY if you have the cash. Ask ALL questions and concerns BEFORE YOU BID!

On Apr-02-15 at 14:07:02 PDT, seller added the following information:

I forgot to mention there was some battery corrosion at one time that caused the battery box to rust through a little, I can send pics if requested no problem.

Truth told, the Manta Rallye was really just an appearance package that included the blacked-out bits on top, some extra gauges and fog lights; but the look is just right. Underneath isn’t nearly as exciting as those big-block muscle-bound big bodies from Detroit; there’s no 396 or Ram Air 400, but instead a frugal 1.9 liter inline-4. This isn’t about going fast, though, it’s about a neat looking Coupe that is rarely seen in the U.S. anymore. As with any older car, there’s some work to be done and the car isn’t without issues; but that said, it’s also considerably cheaper than most typical muscle cars. I like to march to the beat of a different drummer, and the Opel Manta is one neat looking way to do just that.

Maybe you could drop in an aluminum 427 and have the best of both worlds. You would keep it in the GM family. Might need a bigger radiator or a couple of other things.
