1972 Porsche 911T Targa

Over the past couple of weeks I’ve gone through a run of interesting colors on the Porsche 911, or at least they’ve been interesting to me. We had a week of blues and a week of greens. Now we turn to…purple? Here we have a Royal Purple, also known as Lilac, 1972 Porsche 911T Targa, located in Ohio, with Tan interior and 72K miles on it. Unlike the blues and greens I don’t suspect that I’ll come across a large number of purple 911s for this week, but with this one we have an extremely rare example in, if my mind serves me correctly, one of the few non-metallic purple shades we will ever come across.

A 1972 Porsche 911T Targa 2.4 liter MFI. Royal Purple with a tan interior. 72,000 original miles car but the gauges were reset to zero. Matching numbers car according to the COA.

The car was equipped with factory air conditioning. The A/C components have been removed but do come with the car. Hoses and fittings are still there so it can be converted to original.

The car was recently cosmetic redone to its original color combination. The original engine was removed from the car, and it was resealed and serviced and put back(Not rebuilt) Hasn’t been driven much since then, it needs to be broken in.

Has 5 desirable 15 inch Fuchs.

This heavily optioned car comes with a lot of records, the original owner’s manual, factory tool roll with tools, jack, spare tire, along with a COA and the original dealers invoice from 1973 showing that the owner had traded in a 1970 Datsun 240Z towards acquiring this Porsche, and also records the following options:

• 5 speed transmission

• Lilac paint • E/03

• Alloy Wheels

• Stabilizers

• App Group

• Stereo

• Maserati Airhorns

This color combination and history makes this a very desirable addition to your collection of rare Porsches. Truly only a handful were produced with these features, of which the most outstanding is stunning and unique color.

Not a show car, it still needs minor cosmetics but is very presentable.

First off, I will be very interested to see if this 911T can manage to sell for this sort of price. At $125K this is really stretching what we can expect from a 911T and especially from a Targa. If I’m honest, I don’t think there is much chance of a sale, but if there were ever one to reach close to this kind of price I suspect it would be in a very rare color like this one. Given that the seller admits the car is not pristine further illustrates that point. So the price is too high, but this remains an incredibly striking combination and Royal Purple reminds me quite a bit of Amaranth Violet on the 993. It has great brightness that contrasts well with the darker trim pieces, especially showcased by the open-top of the Targa. While I don’t care as much for the contrast with the chrome accents of an early 911, the color itself presents quite well in both shade and direct light and makes for a head-turning alternative to a wide variety of more standard colors. Purple certainly will not suit everyone and like many colors of this sort it is not subtle, but sometimes you just don’t want to blend in.

    $125K ask for a car that you could hardly give away 10 years ago – wow. Purple tulip. Sell now while there are buyers chasing these cars.

    Hopefully, not too soon. I’ve got a solid ’73 T Targa. Sure, I know the funky oil filler cap on the ’72 is worth a little bit of a premium. But if this is any indication of where the market is on these cars, I’ll be happy to sell next year and put that money into a 993.
