1973 Porsche 911T Coupe Sportomatic

I have a couple reasons for wanting to feature this 911: 1) the exterior color is Gemini Blue Metallic, one of the better early blues that Porsche offered and definitely one of my favorites. 2) It’s a Sportomatic, the quirky clutch-less manual-automatic transmission Porsche experimented with in the early years of the 911. A Sportomatic is pretty rare to come across, though this is one of the times where rarity doesn’t always mean increased desirability. Still, for those with an interest in Porsche’s engineering history, either as part of a collection or simply for one’s own curiosity, this one comes from about as late in long-hood design as we can find and should make for a nice example. It is equipped with the MFI 2.4 liter flat-six that was standard in the 911E and 911S – though with less power – but only available in the first half of ’73 for the 911T. That it comes in such a wonderful color makes it just that much more appealing. So here we have a Gemini Blue Metallic 1973 Porsche 911T Coupe, located in Oregon, with 109,802 miles on it and the 4-speed Sportomatic transmission.

Ok, if you are looking for a rare Porsche, this is one of them. Per Porsche Certificate of Authenticity all Matching numbers and correct original color. This car was owned by the same person for over 30 years. It sat in his home garage for many of the last years. We were lucky enough to find this car right in our backyard. The Northwest is know for pristine garage finds like this one. It is completely rust free and no crash damage ever. It is all original body, and completely original underneath as you can see from the photos. When we got the car the engine was in need of a rebuild, probably while it sat for a long time… We had it rebuilt with all new pistons and cylinders and full competition valve job. All the followers were re-finished, plus all hardware was re-plated. The starter and alternator were also rebuilt. We completely replaced the fuel system from the tank to the engine. Also the all new Brake calipers, master cylinder and brake lines. The rear shocks were replaced in addition to many other parts to get this car road worthy for the next owner. All the lights and gauges work proper. The door close with a nice Porsche “cling”. We replaced a lot of seals and gaskets on the body. The wheels are the correct Fuchs that are date coded, along with correct Pirelli tires as the COA. It has a period correct stereo that functions, we found this to replace the late eights tape deck that was in the car. The roll back roof was dealer installed option when it was on the showroom floor according to the prior owner. It is in excellent condition. The head liner is in good condition with a little staining around the edges. All the glass is in very good condition, and the windows roll up and down very easily. The door cards and pockets are in very good condition and are original. I am missing the original tool roll and jack. The Sportomatic transmission works great and is very rare. Many of these car are converted to a regular 5 speed transmission which is very easy to do. What I really like about this car is that it is a Mechanical Fuel injected car. Like the E’s and S’s, which are the most sought after, and command the most money. This car would be a unique addition to anyone collection or a real talking point at any car event. We did everything we could to preserve the originality of this Porsche, and not restore it, but keep it original and ready to go. The paint is in excellent condition, while it was resprayed many years ago, we only painted the drivers and passengers door, and did an excellent match. I like that the interior is all original and not restored with aftermarket covers or carpet. The dash does have two small cracks that are not too bad. The addition of H4 headlights over the sugar scoop head lights are always a welcome addition on these early 911’s. It does not leak any oil. It has been aligned and set to European ride heights for a proper stance and look. It show 9802 miles on the odometer, so it just turned over. Very low original miles for this vintage. As the entry-level 911T, this Sportomatic should come at a fairly reasonable price relative to many of its other long-hood brethren. For the collector being a T may tamp down much of the enthusiasm for this car, but for the enthusiast with an interest in these 911s the lower cost of entry brings its own appeal. It’s said to be pretty much original in the interior, with a resprayed exterior. The CoA verifies the color combination, but we don’t have verification of the roll back roof, said to be a dealer-installed option. That isn’t an option I can recall seeing very often. Otherwise, the condition looks good. We don’t have a really good look at the interior so the full condition of the seats remains somewhat of a mystery, but the dash appears to be crack free and showing very well for its age. We can hope everything else reflects similar care. Bidding currently sits at $59,400 with reserve unmet and I’ll be interested to see where this ends. The market for the 911T has taken some small steps back – really this is the case with many of the long-hood 911s – as collectors set their sights on other models. Prices still aren’t exactly low, but the surges we saw in the past appear to be well behind us.
