1974 BMW 2002 Turbo Polaris Silver
January 19, 2010 by Ben
In response to the Weekend Warrior BMW 2002 that Evan put up on Monday, I’ve found a rare 1974 BMW 2002 Turbo that looks to be in almost show condition.
Only 1672 examples of the 2002 Turbo were produced, painted in either Chamonix white or Polaris silver. This Polaris Silver example went through an extensive restoration after it traveled from a “Japanese ex-formula one racer” to the California Bay area.
A $12K paint job and $4K in OEM parts from Walloth & Nesch brought this 2002 back to its original look; while $18K spent at Bavarian Rennsport in Southern California put a breathe of fresh air into the Bimmer’s young lungs. The owner has all the work orders for the work performed. The only downsides that the owner points out are the original carpet shows some wear, absence of a radio and a crack in the dash.
Other things about the car….
- It’s got the rare close-ration, dogleg 5-speed transmission installed by the factory
- Battery was relocated to the trunk (the trunk arms will need to be sourced and installed). The battery tray was kept in the engine bay if the new owner wants originality.
- I have the full set of engine bay stickers that I’ll leave for the next owner
- There is a box of parts that include mini wipers for the headlights, period-correct Bosch foglight.
- The radiator is a larger capacity one so there is no fan blade installed, instead the cooling is regulated by a knob by the radiator
- The cold start is set up with the knob below the headlight knob
- The rear chrome bumper does not have any pitting and shines real nice. The right part of the bumper though has a small dent
- 6×13 Panasports and tires are in good shape
- Exhaust pipe was relocated to the center
2002 Turbos have been known to fetch a pretty high price. This one looks the part in Polaris silver and the M-Livery. What do you think at $52,000?
