1976 Porsche 930 Turbo Carrera

It isn’t too often that I come across an old Porsche priced at $160K and think the price doesn’t seem too bad. As with any car of that sort the question of “why?” becomes paramount as we try to understand the reason for the seemingly reasonable price and whether the car truly is worth taking on the risk. Here we have a 1976 Porsche 930 Turbo Carrera where we find ourselves in just that quandary. Such is the world we are in with these early air-cooled Turbos. The issues with this one are in one part clear and in one part unclear. The clarity lies in the color: both the exterior and interior colors have been changed. The original colors were Copper Brown Metallic over Black and its current colors are Sahara Beige over Brown. Why the colors were changed is left unsaid and may be unknown as it seems those changes took place with a previous owner, rather than the current long-term owner of the car. It could be as simple as changing to a more desirable palette since brown metallic fell out of favor pretty quickly once we left the ’70s. Still, that’s our first piece of uncertainty. The rest of the uncertainty is more standard as the car recently has come out of long-term storage and that in itself can cause its own set of troubles. Its recent service records will help in that regard, but interested buyers still will want a thorough evaluation to be sure of this 930’s present condition.

We are excited to offer on behalf of one of our clients this outstanding 1976 Porsche 930 Turbo Carrera.

The first generation Turbos were introduced to the US market in 1976 and became instant icons in the world of supercars. The poster child of a wide fendered, low sitting powerhouse that inspired many to dream about and few to own one.

With only 530 units produced, the 1976 Turbo was by far the most expensive and exclusive car out of Stuttgart in 1976 and indeed one of the most potent contenders for the title of the fastest production sports car in the world. Legendary are the stories of weekend warriors finding themselves spinning in a vicious circle as they were somewhat careless flooring the gas pedal not knowing when and how brutal the turbo boost would kick in. A legitimate question today is how many have survived?

Just out of long term storage, this 930 is a very low mile survivor and a rare find indeed. The current owner acquired the car in 1987 from what we believe was the original owner and only drove it for about 3 years. When smog requirements in California made it difficult to register the car, he simply chose to put it away.

The car has just been thoroughly serviced by a mark specialist and presents itself very nice.

The Porsche comes with a Certificate of Authenticity which implies that exterior and interior colors have been changed within the first 10 years of the cars life. Otherwise a numbers matching example and equipped with leather sport seats for driver and passenger and an electric sunroof.

Interesting for collectors: This is car #76 from 1976!

The various points of uncertainty aside, this 930 presents quite well! Regardless of why the colors were changed, its current configuration looks in excellent shape and I think barring any major mechanical issues there is a lot to like here. There is something about these early Turbos that really hits me right and while they won’t give you the performance of any of the later cars they definitely have an edge to them. Plus, I like the look. These cars were lighter and they look it even if the difference is subtle. I’d be interested to know more detail surrounding and its history and condition, but with Hagerty showing a ’76 Turbo Carrera even in condition 3 at an average value of $190K there is some potential value here.
