1983 Porsche 911SC Cabriolet – REVISIT

s-l1600-1

The one-year only Guards Red 1983 Porsche 911SC Cabriolet we featured in late September remains up for a reserve auction. It’s consistently received a bid or two on these auctions right around $50K and now sits with a BIN price that is a little lower than when we first featured it. It’s still a lot of money for a 911SC, but given the low mileage and that these were the first year Porsche produced a Cabriolet for the 911 perhaps it may finally see a sale.

The below post originally appeared on our site September 27, 2016:

On the surface this may look as if I’ve come across another regular 911, very similar to yesterday’s 3.2 Carrera. And in some ways that’s true. The colors are the same and they’re a pretty common combination for these ’80s 911s. There also aren’t any exclusive options or other rarely seen items that would attract notice. This one is all about condition and mileage. With a mere 18K miles on the clock this Guards Red 1983 Porsche 911SC Cabriolet certainly qualifies as one of the lower mileage examples we’ve seen and looks like it’s been well cared for as well. While the 911SC typically doesn’t excite quite as much as its successors the 911SC Cabriolet is somewhat of an exception. This was the first year a Cabriolet was produced as part of the 911 line ending a nearly 20-year absence of Cabriolets from the Porsche lineup dating back to the 356. As the first 911 Cabriolet and only year they were available for the 911SC these 911s are a little extra special and tend to attract greater notice.

West Coast Classics are proud to present an absolutely exceptional example of this original California (with only two documented California owners since new) 1983 Porsche 911SC 3.0L 6 cylinder Cabriolet in the most desirable ‘Guards Red’ color with a black leather interior and with only 18K original miles!

Originally delivered and sold by the renown ‘Bob Smith Porsche/Audi’ dealership of Hollywood California on 8/18/1983 to a well known former fashion model and garaged in her Malibu, California home. She serviced the car at the same ‘Bob Smith’ dealership until the car was traded into ‘Carlsen Motors Cars’, the Porsche-Audi dealership of Palo Alto, California where it was then sold to only its second southern California owner on 5/4/1991 with only 11,947 original miles. The car’s second California owner also always garaged and covered the car and reportedly it has never seen rain under his ownership since 1991 (25 years)!

The first 911 Cabriolet ever debuted in late 1982, as a 1983 model. This was Porsche’s first cabriolet since the 356 model of the mid-1960s. A total of 4,214 were sold in its introductory year, despite its premium price relative to the open-top targa. Cabriolet versions of the 911 have been offered ever since.

This cars factory options include:

Sports steering wheel with elevated hub
Higher amperage battery
Light metal wheels – forged
Automatic speed control
Rectangular front fog lights (white)
Windshield green graduated tint
California type car

The car will be sold with all its original owner’s manuals, handbooks and maintenance booklet and a thick file of service records. From looking at these extensive service records you will notice that at no time was any expense spared on this particular vehicle’s preventive maintenance by it’s former owners. The original factory ‘Guards Red’ color paint is in absolutely beautiful condition as is the original black leather upholstery and interior. The car has its original black soft top and tonneau cover which also boast pride of ownership with no flaws. The car has it’s original spare wheel and factory wrapped tools located in their rightful storage compartment under the hood.

The car obviously drives exactly like a well maintained and serviced 911 SC with only 18K original miles should and must be driven to be fully appreciated and seen to be believed! Drives as when brand new, hardly broken in! This beautiful example of this highly desirable first year cabriolet 3.0L 911SC Porsche is truly for the most fastidious of collectors. The engine is obviously extremely strong and powerful and the 5 speed manual transmission has a buttery smooth transmission shift with no syncro problems as is typical for these year models and the temperature always remains cool. The car also boasts a clean CARFAX report confirming both its ownership history and mileage.

You will surely look long and hard to find a finer and well maintained example of this exceptionally low mileage and increasingly collectible 1983 911 SC Porsche in the sporty convertible bodystyle for the ultimate exhilarating driving experience in this most striking of color combination’s available anywhere else!

Even though they attract greater notice a 911SC Cabriolet still isn’t going to approach the sort of interest we see with the 993 or rare variants of the 964. Those models remain in another league. But among the SC itself really nice examples do command a bit more and the asking price here seems to bear that out. Whether buyers are willing to pay that price may be another matter. Granted, this SC appears to be entirely original, including original paint and interior, and it looks to be well documented. It definitely presents very well, looking almost as it likely did when the first owner purchased it back in 1983. So any buyer seeking one of these first-year Cabriolets will be hard-pressed to find a better example. That in itself should propel this one upwards.
