1984 Porsche 911 Carrera

As the 911 turned 20 years old in the mid-1980s, Porsche would unleash what many consider to be the last true link to the original 911 before the smoother styling of the 964 and 993 took hold: the 3.2 Carrera. This model would carry through until the dawn of the 1990s through a number of iterations. But for me, there’s just nothing better than the classic Carrera coupe. This first year Grand Prix White example for sale in California is a well-documented car, with a history intertwined with the well-known dealership, Vasek Polack Porsche.

I keep looking through the photos of this car and just can’t believe it has over 134,000 miles on the odometer. It really goes to show you that there is no substitute for good care. These air-cooled 911s are become very collectable that it would be hard to fathom that anyone would let one fall into disrepair these days. This ’84 Carrera is the kind of car I keep in the family as an heirloom. Considering the mileage, the price seems a little bit strong, but not too far off. The 1987 through 1989 3.2s with the hydraulic clutch and G50 gearbox are more desirable, but these early 3.2s have their merits in their own right. Values keep creeping upward for well maintained air-cooled 911s and if you find a good one like this, it’s often worth the little bit extra.

The classic white (after guards red) is a favorite of mine on the 3.2 Carrera’s. Get a good PPI when spending this amount of money on a rising classic.

Why do sellers ALWAYS say the AC needs a recharge on these cars. The AC barrier lines need to be replaced as they where designed by the factory to allow high pressure to escape rather than damage the AC system. The newer 134 refrigerant pass through and lose the charge in a quick way. A full redo of the AC is needed and depending if you change out the evaporator and condenser at the time it will add to to a $2500-4000 at a shop that knows what they are doing.
