1986 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet

We are entering convertible season and probably the time of year when many crave open-top motoring the most. There is probably not a shade of color I enjoy more on a Cabriolet than the various blues that are out there. These shades provide the sort of lightness and brightness that goes hand in hand with sunny motoring and combine to create an excellent atmosphere to match the sky above. Here we have the rare triple blue: an Iris Blue Metallic 1986 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet, located in Arizona, with matching blue leather interior and dark blue wheels that is on auction with no reserve. This is not a perfect car by any means as I think there are a few questions to be answered, but as a driver it looks in very good shape with very reasonable mileage.

The undercarriage also shows extremely well and no signs of any accidents ever.

The Blue Full Leather Interior looks fantastic not showing it’s age what so ever. All the gauges, wipers, lights, radio, heater, A/C, cruise control etc…all work perfectly. Also the dash pad, door panels, carpets, and blue convertible top and boot are in Excellent condition. The car shifts perfectly through all gears however downshift to first synchro weak. There was a time around a year ago that a no reserve auction for a 3.2 Carrera would rarely last this long before someone made the seller an offer and the auction was ended early. But that was a seller’s market with values increasing quite rapidly and buyers trying to snap up any Carrera in excellent shape. With some stabilization in the market we are now seeing some of these auctions play out. As a 1986 model this Carrera Cabriolet sits at just the right point for anyone looking for a driver quality car that will hold its value well. Since it lacks the G50 transmission this won’t hold the attention of the collectors to the same degree as a later model, but it still makes for an excellent driving 911 and given the mileage it should have plenty of life left in it. All it needs is some sunshine and a twisty road!

Something strikes me as just a bit off on this one. It’s only had 3000 miles put on it in the last 6 years, but that’s not a big issue. The options sticker under the bonnet does not list 220 which is the options code for limited slip, yet it’s on the COA they show. As is par for the course the front lip rubber spoiler should not be on this car. It didn’t leave the factory with it and Porsche had a TSB suggesting you not run the front without the back or vice versa. Granted, it’s not going to effect the handling at any rational speed and the factory TSB is pretty clear about the air flow being effected only at higher speeds. The underside has been massively steam cleaned, again nothing wrong with that. It’s a plane Jane cab. I think fair value for retail is somewhere in the high $30’s.

Call me a skeptic but there is “no reserve” and then there is no reserve. So much shill bidding goes on in these eBay auctions I don’t believe there is any real “no reserve” auctions. What I have seen recently which is really low is this: Dealers or individuals who list similar car go ahead and shill bid up the competing cars to prices way over the markets, making their own listings look attractive. To be fair I am in no way accusing this dealer of anything at all. They present the car well and it appears to be a nice clean straight cab.

The car has limited slip, you can tell because of the angled “12” stamped in the middle of the transmission number in one of the pics.

There was a period in the 80’s right when this car was made that many or all U.S. cars did not get the options listed on the trunk sticker, beyond the CO2 for U.S. emissions equipment. The sticker in the maintenance book is identical, so that’s no help either. COA’s and the information in the PCA computers aren’t always accurate, to really know what a car came with from the factory, the original window sticker is your best bet.

Wow thanks for the info. I didn’t know that in some of those 80’s years the bonnet sticker and book sticker didn’t have the options codes. I agree PCNA info has been shown inaccurate many times. Thanks again!
