1986 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet – M491

Last week we featured this M491-optioned Carrera Coupe. It sold for its Buy It Now price of $47,000, which at the time of writing I felt was high within the current market. I was wrong. It comes as little surprise then that almost immediately after that auction ended another M491-optioned Carrera appeared on the market, though this time a Cabriolet. Coincidence? Possibly, but we see this sort of thing happen often enough that I assume the second seller is capitalizing on the market, and I wouldn’t blame him. Here we have a M491-optioned 1986 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet, located in Connecticut, with 50,805 miles on the clock.

The Coupe featured last week had 120,000 miles and lacked (at least within the pics and description) the factory-correct Fuchs wheels, yet still sold for $47,000, which suggests that the price here should be pretty reasonable. There is, however, a possible catch. The M491 package naturally is most desirable to enthusiasts as it provides improved braking and cornering relative to the standard car. And, generally speaking, enthusiasts desire the Coupe over the Cabriolet, which would tend to drive prices on the Coupe slightly higher. Of course, as these cars become more prized collectors are sure to catch on so we may see both variants in similar demand. I myself prefer the Coupe, but the condition of this particular Cabriolet, along with the much lower mileage, surely makes it an intriguing option for potential buyers. In the end, the biggest lesson is that if you happen to want a M491-optioned Carrera, then time is quickly running out to get one at reasonable cost.

I remember how several writers on this site mentioned a year ago, that rare air cooled 911’s were overpriced. Today, prices are even higher, and they keep selling.
I wonder what they are thinking now…

I still think they’re overpriced, personally.

I believe they are overpriced, seeing these relatively common cars (non M491) with over 100K miles selling for high prices seems absurd. My irrational preference for the ’84-’89 cars would not cloud my judgment if I were ready to buy an air cooled 911 today. I might just go for the newer ’90 and up cars, which seem vastly unloved (except the 993s) compared to the earlier cars and are selling for less money.
