1986 Porsche 944 Turbo

A lot of the icons we love from the 1980s have either been out of reach or are fast becoming out of reach for collectors of more modest means. The Ferrari Testarossa, Porsche 911 Turbo and more recently, the BMW E30 M3 come to mind. There still exists some quality German iron out there for those on a budget. At the top of my list is the Porsche 944 and 968. Long derided by Porsche purists who thought their sports cars should be air-cooled and have a flat six engine hanging over the rear axle, these four cylinder Porsches are beginning to be more widely accepted in the light of Porsche sedans and SUVs that roam the earth these days.

Out of the entire range, one of my favorites is the 944 Turbo. These were fast cars for their day, capable of reaching 60 mph in under six seconds. Painted in black with black Fuchs alloy wheels, this 944 Turbo for sale in New York has a tough, purposeful look about it.

Ben featured a 1987 944 Turbo back in April that was selling for $12,000. That car had just over 67,000 miles on the clock, which admittedly isn’t a lot more than our feature car. Unless it is an extremely low mileage example, around $12,000 to $15,000 seems to be the sweet spot for these sports coupes nowadays. Considering how the E30 M3 has taken off in value, I think these 944s are an excellent value. Hopefully they continue to be a dark horse in the collector market, because I’d like to snap one up someday.
