1987 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.3 – REVISIT

$_57 (1)

The low mileage Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.3 we featured at the end of last year has resurfaced, not having covered much more mileage but showing a slight price increase. Will the slight uptick in values for the 190E Cosworth have a positive effect on lesser W201s?

The below post originally appeared on our site November 30, 2014:

It’s hard to believe that thirty years have passed since Mercedes-Benz reached downmarket a bit and introduced the 190 series, otherwise known as the “baby Benz.” What seemed like an out of character vehicle for Mercedes has side become become a staple model, morphing into the C class in 1994 and now moving ever upmarket with the introduction of an even smaller model, the CLA. However good these new models are, I’ll always have a soft spot in my heart for the 190E, as my father had a 190E 2.6 about a decade ago. Ever since, I’ve rarely encountered such a fluid drivetrain, competent road manners and excellent build quality in such a small package. This 1987 190E 2.3 has only 67k on the odometer and certainly looks the part. It might not be the bigger engined six or one of the Cosworth engined performance models, but for someone looking for good, honest transportation with a bit of class, you can’t get much better than this.

This is without a doubt a nice 190E, but the asking price is verging into 190E 2.6 territory and that’s before you consider other vintage Mercedes-Benzes that could be had for under $10,000. If all you need is a reliable commuter that returns decent economy, this would certainly fit the bill. But for those looking for a bit more oomph and high speed cruising ability, you might look elsewhere. It might be a tough sell, as we’ve seen a few of these low mileage 190E 2.3s hang around a bit after auctions end, but there’s a driver for every car out there. This one deserves a loving home.

Drove an hour to see this car in person…It was in the lot and I briefly looked it over. Got right back in my car and left without even talking to a sales person. Evidence of some body panel “waviness” in places (prior bodywork…probably relatively minor) Tops of interior door panels poor and crumbling. Ebay pictures definitely made it look better than it is. Much less than a pristine example…I’d put it in #3 condition. with value in the $3,000 to $3,500 range…
