1987 Mercedes-Benz 560SL

$_57 (1)

Since it’s Christmas Day, let’s pose the obvious question: what would Santa Claus drive? I tend to think he would be someone that enjoys a more relaxed cruising style but still appreciates good craftsmanship. Given that, what could be more appropriate than a Signal Red Mercedes-Benz 560SL? This particular R107 for sale in Texas has covered 60k miles, which splits the difference nicely between low mileage museum queen and high mileage basket case.

* Stunning Presentation – Complete with Two Tops
* Clean CarFax – Meticulously Pampered
* Accompanied by All Factory Accessories
* Comes from a fine Florida collection
* A beautifully detailed and exceptionally clean example

In the 560SL, Mercedes got it all just right, offering essentially bullet-proof reliability, satisfying power, and aggressive good looks. The 560SL combined all that Mercedes learned about the V-8 R107 chassis cars into a cultural icon that quietly and confidently told the world its occupants had “arrived.” Standard equipment included driver’s side airbag and ABS brakes. Interior improvements for the 560SL included lovely burlwood accents, improved lateral seatback support, and a power passenger side mirror.

Offer here is perhaps one of the finest preserved 560SL’s we have ever come across. Purchased new in St. Petersburg FL, by a Mr. Jernigan, the car comes meticulously pampered and equipped with air conditioning, power steering and windows, cruise control, premium sound system with cassette, dual front air bags, alloy road wheels, fog lights and rear window defroster among others. All of which are in proper working order.

Retaining its original finish, the 560SL is complemented by both hard and soft tops, alloy wheels, and further complemented by an impeccable tan leather interior with matching carpeting with all the expected Mercedes-Benz convenience amenities. The undercarriage, trunk, engine and underhood area are equally tidy, correct, and impressive in their presentation. According to the original maintenance booklet the car comes from years of certified servicings with a current clean bill of health. Having traveled an average of only 2,300 miles a year since new, it has to be considered a well-kept low mileage example. All original factory accessories are included with the 560SL, including the warranty plate, operations and user manuals, all booklets, unused key fob, top wrenches, unused spare, first aid kit, hardtop stand, original interior hanging instruction tags, tool kit and more.

This near-mint SL has it all, and is ready to provide a stylish open-air driving experience for its next owner as a strong contender for continued enjoyment and preservation. If you have been searching for the right 560sl, we strongly encourage close attention to this car. We encourage inspections and are happy to arrange test drives by appointment.

R107 prices have been creeping up this year. While they haven’t reached the level of their forebears, you used to be hard pressed to find ones breaking the $20,000 threshold. Now, that’s common territory for the nicer, well documented examples. Even those with super low mileage in showroom condition are breaching $30,000 on occasion. I’d say this example is priced just about right, given the condition and mileage and it’s stamped service booklet. The interior and exterior look immaculate, down to flawless burlwood trim. If you’re looking for a no excuses example but are afraid of ruining a garage queen, this would be the ride for you.

It is rare that I will test drive a car, before buying it. I know which models I like, and the 560 SL was one of them. I was very excited when I found a mint 24,000 mile 560 SL, which happened to be in town. Went to the MB dealer with the determination to get it, and the salesperson insisted I take it for a drive.
I accelerated out of the parking lot, and the magic was gone. It felt like I was taking my boat out of the holeshot and on plane.
    Went home, without the car.

audemars, take one out on the highway and stand on it, when the transmission kicks down these cars hammer. A sports car it is not, a bahn burner it is, they devour miles with elegance.

Thanks UrSDriver for the recommendation. That kickdown on the highway you mentioned, is what I like on the 500E.
Next time I see a 560SL around, I will test it on the highway.
