1988 Mercedes-Benz 260SE

Just when I think I’m aware of every Mercedes-Benz model to leave the production line, another one comes along and has me scratching my head. Such is the case with this 260SE for sale near Mannheim, Germany. This is a 1988 model, so it’s legal for export to the US. It’s also optioned like few S class sedans we saw on these shores at the time, with a blue cloth interior and sans electronic climate control. It won’t be a speed demon, sharing the same engine as the 190E 2.6, but for those interested in around town cruising more than highway blasts, it would be a sufficient choice.

While most folks tend to prefer the long-wheelbase W126, I always liked the short-wheelbase model. This wears the same shade of Diamond Blue as a 190E 2.6 that my father owned years ago, a color that looks perfect on this car, especially in combination with the 15 hole alloys. The blue interior may prove to be a bit too much blue for some, but the cloth is an interesting diversion from the leather we normally see here stateside. Given the condition, the asking price is in the ballpark, but for those in the US, they’ll have to tack on a few thousand more to get it over here. Still not an outrageous amount for a W126, but short of a low mileage example, it’s getting a bit pricey.
