1988 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet – M491

509

I’ll continue with the Cabriolet theme, though unlike yesterday’s car which I specifically featured because it was a Cabriolet this one appeals to me for additional reasons and that it happens to be a Cabriolet simply is coincidence. This Cabriolet equipped with the M491 package offers many of the stylistic and handling upgrades of the 911 Turbo, but retains the less highly strung and more maintenance friendly naturally-aspirated 3.2-liter flat-six of the standard Carrera. While accurate production numbers for the M491-equipped cars have been notoriously difficult to pin down for their six years of production (1984-1989) these cars are certainly more rare than a standard Carrera. It does appear that the option was prevalent on Coupes early on and then shifted heavily toward the Cabriolet once the actual Turbo was again made available in the US. Still, as a performance variant the M491-equipped 911s have become highly sought after, especially for the later years that also came with the G50 5-speed transmission.

There has been a tremendous amount of bidding on this car with the current bid sitting at $44,600 and reserve still on. Typical asking prices for a M491-equipped 911 have tended to exceed that number by a decent bit so I assume we are a ways away from meeting the reserve. Given the demand for a 3.2 Carrera this strikes me as exactly the sort of car to pursue. As a rare variant it should have an excellent chance at gaining in value over time and as it currently sits the mileage is such that it can be driven and enjoyed without concern over affecting that long-term value. In that regard it possesses the best of both worlds, though it may come at a significant premium relative to a standard Carrera.

nice find Rob!….now this is more like it for me..and I’m not a drop-top guy…
but at least this car has been enjoyed/driven…is it picture perfect? not compared to the 993 C4S…but it is driver quality perfect…some blemishes on the front & chips….
stunning exterior color..and air cooled and more rare than the 993…

IIRC this car has been offered for sale around a couple of times recently. Nice looking and I agree, its nice to find a “driver” so you dont have to worry about killing the value when you use it.

Nice looking car from the photos
