1988 Porsche 924S

When I think of Porsche I think of the 911, then the Boxster and then the Cayman. I’d wager that much of the general public thinks the same way, perhaps with the Cayenne and Panamera thrown in there instead of the Cayman. For those folks who aren’t automotive enthusiasts, any name that isn’t 911 might not ring a bell when talking Porsches and that’s too bad because as we all know, there are a ton of other great models in Porsche’s historical lineup. The question I’ve been asking myself of late is if the 924 is one of those models.

I’ve never been a big fan of any Porsche with a front mounted motor. The Macan Turbo S and Panamera GTS have certainly softened my stance on the matter but overall, I like my Porsches with a mid or rear mounted power plant. The ever expanding bubble of the air-cooled 911 market has given 924 prices a bit of a bump as well and we’re seeing examples trading at premiums usually reserved for cars with a bit more, well, panache. I suppose that of all the 924 models out there, a red 924S with tan seats would be one worth the jacked up price of admission, especially with under 10k on the clock.

Welcome to Crave Luxury Auto, one of the nation’s premier marketers of high-line and luxury automobile dealers. The winner of this auction will have the opportunity to own this beautiful 1988 Porsche 924 S. The paint is in excellent condition and it is apparent that this car was garaged and meticulously-maintained. The interior is virtually flawless and is equipped with all the right options with only 8,840 original miles. You can’t go wrong with this fabulous vehicle!

Well, this is probably the cleanest 924S you can buy and that shows in the nearly $40k asking price. Personally I wouldn’t care if this thing had just rolled of the assembly line, I just can’t get that excited about it. I appreciate that it is something different but I just can’t justify that kind of a spend on a car that isn’t THE car of its time. Looking at the seller’s photos conjures up images of some Texas oil baron’s kid ripping this thing to prom and doing lines off the dash. Yes, I know there’s a rabid fan base for the 924, people who race them, tune them, restore them, and so on. The thing is I’ve yet to come across is someone who would rather have one than a 911. I’m sure these people are out there and I’d love to find out what it is that makes these cars more appealing than a Carrera. I’ll probably catch a lot of heat for saying this but honestly, I’d rather have a Scirocco or Corrado than a 924 or 944. I’d be mighty tempted by a Turbo model but even in its most potent form, the long nosed Porsche just doesn’t do it for me. Of course there are a whole heck of a lot of folks out there that feel differently and if you’re one of them, this example is a damn fine one indeed. If there was anyway to justify the asking price I think that it would be to look at this vehicle as a time travel device.

Cheers,

-Andrew

A 924 (S or not, I don’t care) with a slushbox for $40k? I’ll take some of what they are smoking. There are very well maintained, yet over 100k miles, 944 Turbos going for under $10k. These are robust cars, I’ll take a much more desirable car in driver shape.

Even in S form, there is no such thing as a desirable 924 slushbox.

I love the 924S and bought a decent one a couple of years ago for $2K. Great introductory performance car that is easy to upgrade and play with. The 924S is a real sports car, unlike a Scirocco or Corrado.

But $39K for a regular 924S with automatic?

No… Unless you are the guy the seller describes, someone who wants to buy a car to win a regional concours preservation class. Those trophies are certainly attractive, but then you would drive home in an expensive 924 with an automatic. Ugh.
