1988 Porsche 930

The Porsche 930 is a fairly constant presence amongst these pages and for good reason. Its brash combination of performance and styling has held our attention for decades and images of these fantastic machines have found their way onto more than one bedroom wall. We always enjoy finding interesting examples and for me personally many times that means finding one in black. A black 930 has the presence to go with the diabolical dynamics and leaves no doubt that this is not a car to be taken lightly. This particular 930 comes from 1988, near the end of the model’s run, and has seen only 46,700 miles.

When I first came upon this auction I had quite a few questions since the description was quite vague other than saying it had a “modernized driveline” along with pictures of the modified engine. The seller has since added a fuller description that helps understand the work done on the car, but really leaves me wondering where a car like this should be valued. A low-mileage 930 is a very valuable car, but the asking price here is likely above what even a fully original example could command. Perhaps if it was a 1989 model, with the 5-speed manual, or from one of the first years of their production, then it might see this price. So what’s a 930 like this worth, assuming the mechanical condition is top notch? It looks fantastic, there’s little doubt about that, but with originality playing such an important role in rising air-cooled 911 values I’m not sure quite what to make of this one.

Why didnt I buy one 5 years ago.. i guess it was out of my price range then when i bought my 83SC…. it’s really out of my price range now… So nice, but I think owning a 930 won’t be one of the things crossed off my bucket list.

I’ve been reading how many writers on this website have been saying that air cooled 911’s are overpriced for at least 1.5 years. I’m sure most of them have missed the boat.
Too late . Pay the cash and stop complaining about the price.

This one is a bit of a Frankenstein. Even if it were well executed it is so far from original in every way (other than appearance) the future buyer should purchase at that price only for driving enjoyment and not for investment. Modern turbo and coil overs? Buy a 964 Turbo (which are exceptional as well). Want a true 930 – buy a well preserved example.
