1989 Volkswagen Cabriolet

The MkI Volkswagen Cabriolet was one of those cars with staying power. Sold from 1980 through 1993, it was to soldier on through the MkII era, as no soft top version of that chassis was ever developed. This was not a very masculine car, however, it did have strong sales in the United States. Several special edition variants were offered, such as the Carat, Wolfsburg and Eitenne Aigner.

With one owner on record and 62,000 miles, this is an impossibly impeccable example of a later model Cabriolet. My compliments to the owner for keeping all that white clean over the years.

1989 Volkswagen Cabriolet on eBay

This week for auction, Volkswagen of North Scottsdale offers an immaculate 1989 Volkswagen Cabrio. This is a pristine example of the MKI Cabio. It is part of our vintage collection. It is a true ONE owner car with only 62k miles. It is fully documented since new. The original owner babied this car and kept meticulous records. The original purchase order indicates the car was sold new at Granite State Volkswagen of Concord, New Hampshire. The impeccable condition indicates this car was stored inside and not exposed to the elements. It is rust free. The car was brought to Arizona in 2009. We acquired this Cabrio earlier in the year and added it to our collection. Now it is time to offer it to sale to the public. If you have been looking for that special Cabrio that you once knew years ago, this is your opportunity to own one of the niceset in the country!

Cosmetically this Cabrio is in excellent shape. It has the special “Best Seller” package that includes color matched wheels and mirrors. The paint is all original and like new. No paintwork or bodywork. No dents or dings. It is Carfax and Autocheck Guaranteed to have NEVER been in an accident. The wheels are all in very nice shape. The interior is still like new. The white cloth seats are in great shape. No tears or rips anywhere. All carpets and panels are like new. All of the accessories work as they should. The aftermarket Alpine CD

Mechanically this Cabrio is top notch! It was well maintained and serviced at regular intervals by the original owner. The engine starts right up and runs strong. It doesn’t leak anything either. The clutch feels good and the gearbox tight. It just had an oil and filter change, along with valve cover gasket replacement. The AC was converted to 134a and blows ice cold. At 53k it had a major service that included: Oil and filter, Front brakes and rotors, timing belt and tensioner, all three drive belts, coolant flush, and new spark plugs. At 55k the shifter bushings were replaced and the differential was serviced. The matching Sprinter tires are all nice and have lots of tread left. This Cabrio is ready to be driven.

With it’s 1.8 liter four cylinder, this car won’t light your hair on fire, but the 5 speed manual will help make it more usable in traffic. But speed isn’t what this car is about. It’s about fun, letting the sun shine in and enjoying the open air motoring without giving up the practicality of your workaday Golf. I’ve rarely seen a MkI Cabriolet, even in excellent condition, sell for more than $6,000 to $7,000, and the asking price for this example is steep. I’d estimate about $4,000 off the asking price would be enough to move this car in short order.

When I was in high school, a male friend of mine was given a pretty similar car (white vw cab) for his 16th birthday. If there was ever a “girl” car of the era, this was it.
