1990 BMW 325iX

For those of us who live in colder climates in the northern hemisphere, a lot of cars we feature this time of year on GCFSB are pipe dreams. All-wheel drive is a very useful tool, but save for the errant Audi Quattro, what other modern classics out there can match that foul weather capability? Perhaps a BMW 325iX should be on your list. Offered for just a few short years in the US market at the end of the E30 production run, these cars featured a three differentials and had a 37/63 front to rear power split. It’s hard to find a clean iX these days, but this one for sale in South Carolina looks tidy and has had a comprehensive amount of work done.

Year: 1990
Model: 325iX
Engine: 2.5 inline six
Transmission: 5-speed manual
Mileage: 160,000 on current engine
Price: $7,500

1990 BMW 325iX on Craigslist Atlanta

Up for sale is my 1990 Brilliantrot 325ix 5-speed. Car has been a journey. Its been a lot of fun working on this car but I think I would like to invest in some more E30s. Transfer Case is in good working order. PO had the car painted. Its not in bad good condition. The hood has some scratches on it. The interior is in good condition. The driver seat does have a rip on the left side. Just replaced the ODO gears. I only have a couple of pics to post tonight. Like I said this was a feeler and got the urge to post it.

I am just seeing whats out there. I am currently looking for an E28 M5. Car is super fun to drive. Car has ZERO RUST. Engine came from an ’89 iX that had 160k on it. I’m sure I’ve missed a couple of things. Car is located in South Carolina. I have a video of doing the Jack Test. PM your cell and ill send video. Thanks for looking and please let me know if you have questions let me know. I hope to have some interior shots tomorrow. There maybe somethings I’m missing but aren’t deal breakers. Just ask if you dont see. Car does come with an extra IX specific engine w/out head. I do have the original suspension setup also. Just purchased brand new tires all four 205/55/r15s.

Asking price is $7500.

Currently this is whats been done to the car since June:

• Front axle boots & rear boots replaced
• All gaskets changed (oil pan = no fun)
• New thermostat housing
• New water pump
• New timing belt
• All new belts
• All new coolant hoses
• New radiator
• All new flex disc
• Transmission seals
• Rear main seal
• 17lb injectors
• Motor mounts
• Newer control arms
• New tie rods
• New sway bar links
• New slotted/drilled rotors
• z3 short shifter with all new bushings
• Euro smileys
• New Bosch spark plugs
• Valve Clearance
• New clutch/pressure plate
• New oil level sensor
• New slave cylinder
• Euro bumper trim
• All splines have Moly 60
• iS lip
• H&R Sports
• Bilstein all four corners
• New battery
• New fogs
• New fluids
• New brakes
• Magnaflow exhaust
• K&N intake

From the one picture in the ad, this car certainly looks a lot cleaner than the usual iX you run across. The seller seems reasonable, so hopefully he would be willing to share more photos with interested parties. The asking price is right around the high end of iX values, so it would appear the seller is looking to recoup some of the outlay for maintenance and repairs. One thing that is concerning is the engine swap; more color on this issue and the amount of miles on the chassis would be of benefit to interested parties.

Thanks to our reader Chad for alerting us to this ride!

These are a great AWD system as well, mechanical, simplistic, and actual AWD. Unlike Haldex systems that you see in Swedish cars or VWs.

Neat car. Thought about picking one up that was for sale locally a couple of years ago but the shop I used talked me out of it — said that they were a PITA. Not sure why, but he’s a big E30 fan otherwise and he’s worked on BMWs for 25+ years. I was tempted to disregard his advice because the idea of an AWD E30 is just cool.
