1990 Porsche 911 Carrera 2 Targa

I think by this point it should be pretty clear that I’m a big fan of the 911 Targa. I really like the versatility between open-air and closed cockpit and generally find the aesthetics to be more appealing than with a comparable Coupe or Cabriolet. On the classic 911 design the Targa roll-hoop provides a nice contrast and break in the design that I find very appealing. That’s particularly true on long-hood models. With its reintroduction for the 991 the Targa is easily my favorite. The 964 always has been a little different. The sweeping changes in design from the 3.2 Carrera don’t seem to look as good to me even though the 964 retains so much of the classic 911 look. It just doesn’t look as fluid.

Yesterday I chanced upon a 964 Targa on the street. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen one in person. My sense of it changed, though only some. It looked better in person than I remembered. I still prefer the earlier Targas and prefer the look of the 964 Coupe over the Targa, but the gap has narrowed. But I was thinking about that Targa after coming across this Targa: a Grand Prix White 1990 Porsche 911 Carrera 2 Targa, located in Arizona, with 60,342 miles on it. Maybe I’ll come around on the design even more!

This Porsche’s classic factory Gran Prix White paint is gorgeous and was just fully buffed and hand waxed. The car has been fully cut and buffed to a brilliant shine on all panels. The body on the car is laser straight, and does not have even a single door ding! The front bumper shows very minor chipping you’d expect from road use. The car is all original paint with exception of the rear deck lid which previous owner told me was done at porsche, only experts will know when looking at it. The car is arrow straight and is Carfax and Autocheck certified to have never been in an accident. The black Targa top looks excellent and seals up great and the headliner inside has been restored. Car really is one of the best examples of a 964 Targa on the market!

The car is riding on good looking, 17″ Factory Cup wheels. They are dated from 1992 but still very period correct. They are all in nice shape with no curb rash and re-finished and wrapped in Pirelli PZero All Season performance tires.

The beautiful Tan leather interior is all original and looks great. The German leather seats have really held up well with no scuffs and minimal ware lines. Everything works in the car.. lights, gauges, radio, seats, windows, locks, a/c blows ice cold, etc. The car will also include its original manuals, service book, accessories, compressor and tool kit.

Mechanically, this Porsche is in great condition and runs and drives great. It has very healthy and very quick. This car boasts 247bhp and flys 0-60 in 5.5 sec with a top speed of approx 165mph! The car has a very strong G50 transmission that shifts perfect. The car has just been serviced at an Porsche Only service center with Mobil 1 and was given a clean bill of health. This car drives beautifully and truly a blast with the Targa top Off. This car is very clean under the hood and really shows how its previous owner took excellent care of it. The A/C blows ice cold and the heat works as it should.

Good luck in the bidding!

In a lot of ways this Targa checks most of the boxes. It presents very well inside and out and while white isn’t always everyone’s favorite I do find it to be a nice color on the 964. It’s contrast here with the Tan interior works particularly well. The mileage is pretty low and it’s mostly original. It sounds like the original wheels are no longer with the car, but purely on looks the Cup wheels certainly aren’t to its detriment. It even sounds like it’s well documented, though naturally we’ll want to review that since what we are shown in pictures doesn’t seem like it would be exhaustive. None the less, we’re at a nice starting point and this looks to be a good, honest, 911 with a ton of life left in it.

Bidding currently sits at $40,100 and with six days remaining on the auction I’m curious where this will end. It’s not a bad price now, but how much higher might things go?

Its on Autotrader for $53,900. Hasn’t moved more than a couple hundred miles since 11/2013 which is odd. Not a bad looking car for that price.
