1990 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 Targa

I have featured a 964 Carrera 4 previously – quite frequently actually. As the first model Porsche released for its substantial redesign of the 911, the Carrera 4 is a not uncommon visitor for us. I have also frequently featured the 964 Targa, because I like Targas and it’s interesting to keep an eye on what was the last of the original Targa design prior to its change for the 993. However, I’m not sure I have ever featured the model that combines the two: a 964 Carrera 4 Targa. That seems strange to me if it is indeed the case. Of the standard Carreras the Targa was produced in far fewer numbers relative to the Coupe and Cabriolet, and with only 1,329 total the Carrera 4 Targa saw the lowest production numbers of the bunch. So some of it is strictly a numbers game. But I still find it strange. Regardless, let’s take a look at one of these rare visitors to our pages with this Black 1990 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 Targa, located in New York, with 81,041 miles on it.

Given its age and mileage this Targa presents remarkably well. The black paint looks in fine shape with no notable blemishes and the interior looks clean and with little wear to the carpets or seating. It’s stated that all paint and interior materials are original (other than the radio, which clearly is not original) and that it’s well documented. It isn’t entirely clear to me whether the Cup wheels were originally ordered with the car or whether they are originals that have been added. In either case, they make for a fantastic addition as any 964 wears them well. Everything else appears to be in order.

Since we don’t see them often I’m less sure of what sort of price we can expect. Carrera 4s tend to do well when in good shape and we even see the 964 Targa show nice value too given that there weren’t a lot of them. Higher values do tend to come with the ’94 model year though so I’m not sure whether we’ll see similar increases with this 1990. All in all this is a nice example and nice 964s have been showing better value. All of that should tell us that we can expect its current bid of $30K to increase and we’ll have to see just how high it might go.

Black tie 964 C4 targa! All compliments! With black wheels I wouldn’t look, just me.

Those wheels were not available in 1990 so they cant be original to the car. Looks like a nice car but I have read too many horror stories about this seller to really make it worth while to consider this car unless you do a huge amount of DD on it. The export parade to Europe ended 2 years ago when the Euro took a huge dump vs. the USD. This car has been on the market for nearly 6 months. Black/Black Targa surely is a nice desirable car just be careful.

Ah, the so-called ‘Sputnik’ all-wheel drive system adapted from the 959 supercar. This is not a term of endearment. Unless you really want AWD, a Carrera 2 964 is the way to go.

@RPM – pretty funny. They’re a bit diabolical at the track in stock form – they didn’t like to turn at all. That said, they can be made to turn apparently, though it takes some talent and mods!
