1990 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet

We have many fans of the 964 around here and it is certainly a nice time to be a fan of these cars. As values of the 3.2 Carrera have risen, the value of a standard 964 has remained fairly constant. Granted, many of the model variants like the RS America, the wide-body Carrera 4, and especially the 3.6 Turbo and Turbo S, have shown tremendous increases in value, but for a basic Carrera 2 or early Carrera 4 there’s a lot of good car to be had for the money. The 964 itself was a hallmark for Porsche as it represented the first significant redesign of what had become an icon of automobile design. Still, there is no mistaking that the new design was anything other than a 911 as all of the basic cues were retained. As the days continue to get warmer then why not enjoy some open-top motoring in a 964: here we have a Stone Grey Metallic 1990 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet, located in Arizona, with Grey leather interior and 85,000 miles on it.

This Porsche’s classic factory Stone Grey Metallic paint is gorgeous and was just fully buffed and hand waxed. The car is a full repaint and is a nice, above driver quality re-spray. The car has been fully cut and buffed to a brilliant shine on all panels with no signs of poor tape lines or over spray. The body on the car is laser straight, and does not have even a single door ding! The front bumper and hood show minor chipping you’d expect from road use. The car is arrow straight and is Carfax and Autocheck certified to have never been in an accident, and most likely was repainted due to fade from its life in two sunny climates, Florida and Arizona. The black convertible top looks brand new with zero ware and was replaced brand new in 2011. The original canvas top boot is included to finish off the look of this Cabriolet.

The power top system on the car is currently bypassed, which is a common practice on these cars. Current operation consists of power latches in front still operational by pressing the top switch, then manually put top down into place. Not sure what reason for that was, but car does show a repair receipt for $1800 at 59k miles showing both top transmissions and cables being replaced, so if you desire a fully functioning power top it may be something very simple to return it to stock operation.

The car is riding on its non-original but rare, Porsche 16″ Staggered Cup Design 92 wheels. They are all in nice shape with no curb rash and re-cleaned and wrapped in Michelin All Season performance tires.

The beautiful light grey leather interior is all original and looks great. The German leather seats have really held up well with no scuffs and minimal ware lines. Everything works in the car.. lights, gauges, radio, seats, windows, locks, a/c blows ice cold, etc. The car will also include its original manuals, service book, accessories, compressor and tool kit.

Mechanically, this Porsche is in great condition and runs and drives great. It has very healthy and very quick. This car boasts 247bhp and flys 0-60 in 5.5 sec with a top speed of approx 165mph! The car has a very strong 5-Speed G50 transmission that shifts perfect. The car has just been serviced at an authorized Porsche service center with Mobil 1 and was given a clean bill of health. This car drives beautifully and truly a blast with the top down. This car is very clean under the hood and really shows how its previous owner took excellent care of it. The A/C blows ice cold and the heat works as it should. Recent service includes an oil and lube at 85k, new A/C compressor, new belts, and a full recharge and conversion to R-134.

This car comes complete with an impressive maintenance history starting at about 39,000 miles. Service book is well stamped and receipts document rest of service to current mileage of 85k. Over $20,000 in documented work has been done on this car since the year 2000. Some of the major documented work completed includes All new oil lines running from front to back, new rings installed at 47k, and a full engine out rebuild of the motor at 50,000 miles which included all new seals, new timing chain, new rod seals, all clutch assemblies checked, and everything re-assembled, valves adjusted, and given the green light! Also recent work includes new ABS control module and a new Air Conditioning compressor.

This car is ready to go! The exterior of this Cabriolet is stunning in Stone Grey Metallic with Light Grey leather interior and is definitely a desired color combination for the 911. This car is an excellent value and is a lot of car for the money, and with these low miles…you cant go wrong!

We probably wouldn’t call this one super low mileage as the seller has, but at 85K miles it’s in a very reasonable range given its age and certainly wouldn’t be considered high mileage. As a driver-quality 964 this one looks pretty good and presents well both inside and out. That it wears non-original wheels, though they fit the profile very well, is less of an issue on a driver. I’m not sure of the veracity of the seller’s claim about the power top bypass being common on these cars as it’s the first time I’ve heard mention of that, but the top itself looks in good shape and a manually folding top generally isn’t too difficult to operate. All in all, a really nice looking example of an early 964 Cabriolet. I suspect the asking price will need to come down closer to $30K for this to sell, but relative to what that gets you for an earlier 3.2 Carrera that’s really not bad value at all.
