1991 E34 M5 Surfaces in Tacoma

January 20, 2010 by Aaron

A very clean 1991 E34 M5 has hit the market in the Pacific Northwest.  The market for these cars can be a bit of a mixed bag as condition and care vary wildly.  This example looks to be well cared for and in very good condition.  At 136k the mileage is still reasonable and the seller states the car comes with records as to avoid any surprises.

1991 M5 for Sale

“1991 BMW E34 M5. One of the 1,485 hand built machines for the US. 310 horsepower from the factory. Very fast, amazing handling and braking in a civilized package.136,000 miles. Beautiful condition inside and out. Black on black leather. Power everything. Lots of service records. This car has been loved its whole life. Original other than Alpine alarm with keyless entry, Bav Auto springs, Bilstein Sports, Self Leveling Suspension Delete, 850 bushings, Racing Dynamics strut bar and sways, and Turner motorsport chip. The only flaws in the interior are a slightly warn shift knob and a very small worn corner of the drivers door panel pocket. The exterior is very nice with very minor cosmetic blemishes here and there. All original VIN tags in place. All original paint except for grille and mirror faces painted for rock chips. Amazing for an 18 year old car. The S38 motor runs great with excellent compression and leakdown numbers (photo documentation available). An incredible driving and looking car. The best car I’ve ever owned. I’d love to keep it forever but I’ve been given the chance to buy what I consider the ultimate classic BMW. If I could afford both, I would! I’m asking $12,500 but cash talks!”

While not a show car this is a very clean M5 at a fair price.  The seller paints a very thorough description and the pictures that accompany the ad are fantastic.  The photo taken from the top could have been hanging in my room as a very young fellow when my M car lust first began.  The photos also shed some light on the cars warts, all of which could be addressed with enough time and money.  Assuming the PPI checked out this would be a great value at $12.5K.

Sick find, Aaron. Great pictures, too. They accentuate how sexy and evil this car is.

It is amazing what good photos can do for a car in an advertisement. Those are great and it shows the extra effort that gets cars sold because it is clear the owner cares. They also give a buyer a chance to really look over the car remotely, instead of having to squint at some low-res camera-phone images.

Nice. Beware the BavAuto springs, though. They’re the worst of the common E34 springs and probably softer than stock. H&Rs or Eibachs would be a must. Also, T-stars on a ‘91? I wonder if he has the original turbine covers? :)

A PPI is unbelievably important on one of these. An S38 rebuild is more expensive than the $12.5K car.

Great point Pat, I was wondering about the stock wheels as well.

On the PPI, while it is reccomended with any fine German auto, it is a must with a car such as this. While the seller is providing records there is no mention of any motor work which makes me a bit nervous.

Thanks for the compliments guys! I really appreciate you featuring my car on this blog. My Hartge H23 was featured here a while back as well. Its great to see my cars on a site that I visit so often.
This M5 is a great car. Its in very good condition exterior and interior. Its not perfect but considering the age, mileage, and original paint, its very good. I was as skeptical as anybody when buying a S38 powered M Car. Within a week of purchasing it, I had my mechanic do compression and leakdown tests and just a general look over. The test results were excellent and I think he fell in love with the car after his test drive. (He drives a Porsche 930) I have receipts back to 97′ and the car has received a lot of love over the years. I’d be more than happy to go over the specifics with any interested parties. Here is a link to a bunch of detailed photos including the leakdown and compression test.
