1992 Mercedes-Benz 500SEL

3

I remember vividly when the Mercedes-Benz W140 debuted. It seemed such a big departure from the W126 S-class, both in physical size and technology. Pouring over the pages of a brochure sent to my father from Mercedes-Benz North America, I marveled at this car’s features, such as the small chrome posts that would emerge from the rear fenders to help guide in parking and the new 6.0 liter V12 that found its way under the hood of the 600SEL, a car which could be optioned with four-place seating. If that wasn’t enough, the W140 could quite possibly be one of the few vehicles to feature an electrically adjustable rear view mirror. If that isn’t over the top, I’m not sure what is. Some folks liked this car for its technical prowess, others derided it for its size and excess in a worldwide recession. It’s hard to think, though, that a quarter century has passed since this car’s introduction, giving way to successors it bore little resemblance to. This 1992 500SEL for sale in South Dakota is a like new example with less than 20,000 miles on the clock.

I normally don’t like beige cars, but there’s something about a classic Mercedes in Smoke Silver that grabs my attention every time. It amazes me to see older cars like this escape the ravages of time and mileage, curious as to what their story might be. For someone pining for the old days of Mercedes-Benz vault like build quality and over-engineering, this 500SEL certainly fits the bill. Considering what other, higher mileage W140s are fetching these days, the asking price here is much higher than what we’re used to seeing. However, low mileage examples of the S-class sedan are seldom seen. If you budget well for the inevitable repairs along the way, this is one way to look like a million dollars for pennies on the dollar.

    Rare smoke silver?
“Just serviced”. Except for the ASR light and the reverse rods sticking up in all of the poorly taken photos.
    Still, a beautiful car.

This car has a digital odometer. 1992 W140s had analog odometers from the factory. Obviously the instrument cluster was replaced.

I find a silver exterior with tan inside a nice combination, much better than gray or black inside. Since I am not a fan of 99% of silvers (which are usually just cheap grays), this combination at least improves it for me.

Is it my imagination or did someone photoshop digital images into the analog odometer?

The cream beige interior in most W140s kills it for me completely. Ash is not much better. I got lucky and found a 1 CA owner 1992 400 SE (only year US SWB V8) black on black with 60ish k miles two years ago. Car was very nice and did not need a lot to make it near perfect. I paid less than 10% of the asking price of this one. If he gets 7.5k he should be happy.
