1992 Volkswagen Corrado SLC – REVISIT

The low mileage 1992 Volkswagen Corrado SLC we featured back in March has reappeared. As I prepare for another trip back to Europe in a few days, one thing I enjoy is getting to see all the vehicles we are denied here in the US. A car that sticks out in my mind lately is the Volkswagen Scirocco. Perhaps Volkswagen might reconsider sending this sports coupe back to the US with the falling value of the Euro, but it seems unlikely. The last sports coupe we would see from Volkswagen would be the car we see here. Whether its the earlier G60 or later SLC, good examples are in short supply these days. This particular car has triggered a bidding frenzy, so it should be a good car to watch to see where the market currently stands for the VR6 engined Corrado.

The below post originally appeared on our site March 16, 2015:

Volkswagen’s model lineup in the US has expanded rapidly over the last decade but as with many manufacturers, they save their most tasty treats for the home market. Such is the case with the Scirocco, the Portuguese built sports coupe based on the Mk5 Golf chassis. While we have received every iteration of the GTI, VW seems to feel that bringing the Scirocco to the US will eat into sales of the hot hatch. I tend to disagree, but then again, I’m not sitting in the Volkswagen Group’s budget office. Still, it’s rather sad we haven’t seen a sports coupe since this car we see here, the Corrado. This SLC for sale in Virginia Beach has the desirable VR6/5-speed manual drivetrain and they rarely come this nice anymore, with this one showing just over 50,000 miles on the odometer.

Every now and then I’ll come across an original, well preserved car that brings me right back to my childhood. This Corrado is one of them. Red wasn’t my favorite hue, but it certainly doesn’t put me off from the desire to own something like this. We featured a similar red 1992 Corrado SLC 5-speed back in December that had just under 37,000 miles on the clock. It sold for $9,500. That car did not have the leather interior, but it serves as a good bellwether for where values are on these coupes. Sure, you can get into an E36 M3 at this price range, but amazingly, the people’s car is the one offering more exclusivity in this case.

Wow, I never before noticed how freely VW’s designers borrowed from classic 911s…keeping it in the family, I guess!

Is it a 911 kit car with a VR6 engine in it?

I had three VR6 Corrados back to back from 1993 till 2007. They are just Great cars. Lousy electricals, but they fit great and are always fun to drive. Great touring car. Very well built bodies.
This one needs Canadian seats belt ASAP. I also prefer the heater controls from the 93.
