1994 Porsche 928GTS

The market for collectible Porsches seems to have stagnated in recent months. Uncertainty about the economy, the grim future of monetary policy, and the fickleness of the stock market make illiquid assets such as collectible cars seem riskier now than in recent history. As a result, values of rare Porsches such as the 928 GTS have remained static over the summer.

Sporting the classic Guards Red on Black color combo, the 928 GTS featured here is one of several listed on eBay. With prices ranging from $49,000 to $120,000, this car is one of the lower-priced and higher-mileage GTSs on eBay. All of the available cars are fitted with automatic transmissions. Examining the 928 Registry reveals that this car has had several owners, and has resided in the states of Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kansas, Florida, and Washington. A Google search of the vin uncovers a recent eBay advertisement for the car when it was listed for sale by owner in Arizona with an asking price of $55,000. Given the information available online, it’s obvious that this car has been around, but it has fortunately spent the majority of its time in dry southern climates.

The dealer that has this car listed for sale appears to have done an admirable job in staging it. The paint appears to be in good condition, and the interior and exterior appear to be very clean. Overall, the car appears to be in very good condition given the mileage. The only noticeable imperfections in the pictures are some rippling on the cassette box cover, missing factory wiper blade spoilers, inoperable interior lights, what appears to be an inoperable hatch locking mechanism, a missing rear tow hook cover, and some vinyl pulling up on the driver’s side door card (where the trim meets the window). There are a few modifications on the car (window tint, aftermarket stereo, etc.), but all appear to be tasteful and easily reversible.

Using 930 prices as a metric, it seems as though an unforeseen endless supply of premier low mileage examples has prevented prices from continuing their upward trajectory, and has forced sellers to sit on their cars longer than would have a year ago. This seems to be a situation in which supply has exceeded demand, and buyers have the opportunity to wait until an example fitting a stringent list of various desired criterea becomes available at an attractive price. I believe the 928 market may be suffering from something similar, as potential buyers feel that there is a similarly large supply of pristine examples that will show up for sale any day now. We shall see, but given that only 406 928 GTSs (compare to 639 1989 930s) came to North America, I highly doubt that very many collector worthy and low mileage specimens exist.

Let me just say that over 80% of 928’s were ordered with automatic transmissions for a reason.
