1995 BMW 840Ci

While the BMW E31 isn’t a model that we feature constantly here on GCFSB, it’s certainly one that graces the pages on a regular basis. However, nearly all of the time we’re looking at the car that grabbed the headlines – the V12 engined derivatives that really brought BMW’s Grand Touring coupe more towards the jet set. However, quietly in 1993 BMW launched a more affordable and economic version of the 8-series when it planted the all-aluminum M60 V8 in the slanting nose. Perhaps enthusiasts overlooked it a bit because it wasn’t as powerful as the M70/73 or the S70, but to me the 840 was closer to the 635CSi that it replaced than the V12 model was. Like most of the end-of-the-run E24s, the 840 only came to the U.S. in automatic though, meaning less enthusiasts saw it as an exciting development. The 840Ci thereby became the red-headed stepchild of the E31 lineup – not exotic enough to grab the same headlines as the V12, but too expensive and not manual or powerful enough for the M crowd. Two decades on, though, the more rare to find 840Cis might just be a smart alternative for those interested in the awesome BMW GT:

TITLE IN HAND AND READY TO GO!!!

1995 was the crossover year from the M60 4.0 to M62 4.4 liter motor and there was no indication in the listing of which motor powered, so I searched the VIN – which came up with some interesting listings. Depending on which site you believe, this car is for sale in either Massachusetts, New York or Pennsylvania for between $5,000 and $9,000. All seemed to agree, though, that this was a 4.0 and not the later 4.4 model. Horsepower between the two was the same, but the power curve of the 4.4 was a bit flatter and it had more torque. This car has some nice upgrades like the M-Parallel wheels that look the business and the stainless exhaust that echos the V12 model. With under 100,000 miles and a recent suspension overhaul, the condition appears to be very good and while the V8 model is only slightly less complicated than the V12 models, bills should be a bit lower than the more common M70 engine. Plus, don’t forget that the M60 only produced around 10 horsepower less when new and was less nose-heavy. For under $10,000, this is a great looking Grand Tourer that might just be the answer for making E31 ownership possible on a more reasonable budget.

the styling is just stunning…the power plant meh…but for highway cruising it should do..nice call on the M-Paras….and exhaust

I like a lot about this car, especially M sport steering wheel which look way better than stock. Car would better with better tires too. Nankang tires are generally junk. Nevertheless, well preserved specimen.
