1996 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe – Sonderwunsch

Porsche’s Sonderwunsch Programm – now known as Porsche Exclusive – provides customers with a wide array of options to make their car just that extra bit more special. The most well known vehicle to pass through their doors probably was the original Slantnose 930, which took the excessive performance of the 911 Turbo and gave it a front-end to match. Then there are even rarer, but less obviously special ordered, examples like the 993 Speedster, commissioned by Jerry Seinfeld, but most commonly cars ordered through the Sonderwunsch Programm showcase one consistent feature: color. There is, of course, a (significant) cost associated with making such choices and we always enjoy coming across these cars with their unique color combinations, especially in the interior where we are more likely to see greater diversity among the various trim pieces, carpets, and seats. Occasionally these Special Wishes cars are tame with only an external color choice that most may not even realize was specially ordered. In other cases they can be downright wild – for better or worse. The one we see here, a 1996 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe, located in Alabama, appears to have found a nice middle ground with plenty of details that set it apart from any standard 911, but without going crazy. The color combination may not be to everyone’s liking, but I would assume that would have more to do with individual color preferences rather than the particular choices made here. I think the choices made here were fantastic:

There is a strong oceanic feel to the palette the original owner chose for this 911 combining Turquoise Green on the exterior with Marble Grey and Midnight Blue for the interior. For me it works really well with an eye-catching exterior shade that we can linger over and an interior that feels very inviting, yet also possesses an interesting contrast of light and dark shades. It’s ostentatious, but perhaps in the best sense of that term. The mileage remains very reasonable, neither especially low nor especially high, which means it can probably still be driven and enjoyed, if on a somewhat limited basis. A 993 like this should fare well on the market as unique colors have been highly sought after by many collectors hoping to make the most of the air-cooled market. The seller hasn’t provided in the ad all of the necessary documentation to verify the build of this car, which will be a must for its long-term value, but assuming such documentation is available then I would imagine it will help out this auction quite a bit. At this time, bidding sits at $55,000 with reserve unmet and I’ll be interested to see where this ultimately ends. The current bid is pretty strong for a standard Carrera, but I imagine the seller will be hoping to extract a decent premium given the special ordered colors.

I would have to see the COA in order for me to buy the “Special Wishes” part of this story. For what it is, this car is fully priced with that starting bid. Nice color in the photos… really need to see it in person. I bet its even better in person. The interior colors is nothing too out of the ordinary, marble gray and blue.

A breath of fresh air among all the oh-so-sinister (mostly to their owners) Darth Porsches that are constantly available……

Love the paint. It’s like a toned down MInerva, which itself is heavenly. The inside as I look at it more and more is nice, if only for the presence of several colors instead of usual monochrome. I would prefer a saddle color on the seats. The blue is rather pretty — it’s clearly not been faded by UV. The wheel leather looks in good shape. What throws me is the purple carpet? What I can’t decide is if Porsche could not match the hue between dash and carpet, or the carpet is not meant to match? The whole car reminds me of an orchid, quite nice really.
