1997 BMW M3 Coupe with 45,000 Miles

The value of E36 M3s has been much debated over the past few years, with detractors snickering and deriding every asking price and speculators suggesting their worth is many times the average selling price. While it’s true you can find cheap E36 M3s, the question remains – where is the market going on these cars? The result of their relatively low value for such a protracted period means that today there just aren’t the glut of good examples that there once were, so when a really nice one comes along, now too do the bids. Case in point – today’s 1997 Coupe. A quick search of my local Craigslist ads suggests I can buy one of these for $6,500. No, actually, I can buy four of them, all for $6,500 (or less). So why would I pay more for this one?

It’s always a bit frustrating to see the comments indicating that you can buy this same car for a fraction of the asking price, because inevitably they’re never apples to apples comparisons. Those $6,500 M3s near me? The wrong wheels, dubious modifications, automatics, rust, close to 200,000 miles, poor exteriors, even more poor interiors, and little or no disclosed maintenance. Those cars are worth $6,000. This one is another beast entirely. First, it’s quite a desirable color in Dakar Yellow, and is paired with again desirable Vaders. Condition appears to be excellent throughout and commensurate with the very low mileage. It’s all original, too, minus the disclosed front bumper repaint. Original options were the rear spoiler (325), sunroof (401), heated seats (494), automatic climate control (534), cruise control (540), on board computer (554), hifi stereo (676), CD prep (692), and the best one – the M Double Spoke forged wheels (783). Honestly, I think these cars look much better without the spoiler, but it is correct and original. This is about as nice as one of these coupes comes to market, and the bidders have reacted. With two days to go, active bidding has already surpassed $16,000. Now, that may sound like a lot, but consider for a moment that Enthusiast Auto Group is asking $32,000 for an arguable less interesting ’99 (admittedly with a few less miles). The reserve is still on, but this E36 may help to set a new market trend if it is removed past $20,000.

Pretty weak interior photography, no engine shots, exterior not pristine – I am not sure this M3 is all that.

It’s frustrating. This is the model I had pegged as something to pick up in a couple of years a few years ago, and now the market has gone nuts. In reality it really isn’t that a special car, compared to other special cars. We didn’t get the right engine here in the US, it isn’t as manic as the E30 M3. It does have good handling and a torquey engine, but now the good examples are priced way too much IMHO. Oh well, I missed the boat on these. Now I would rather pick up a 5 series for seriously less bucks.

A 45 K M3 is a keeper. Anything with freshened suspension and cooling system up to date and under 100K will make a great car to enjoy every time you drive. I loved mine. At the time I also had a Corrado VR6. I loved them both . Not sure which I liked better (The Corrado engine for sure was more fun)
The only thing I didn’t like about the M3 was at times it felt agrarian when approaching redline. Such a great platform though. I especially love those forged LTW wheels. Worth the current auction price.

I was in the market for one last month. Almost bought one for $14K with 75k miles. Excellent condition with a repainted rear bumper from a parking lot accident with full documentation. I hesitated for a few days and it was purchased by my neighbor. Even without the european engine it still felt special. Good examples are definitely worth $15 to $20K, with prices still going up.
