1997 Mercedes-Benz SL500 40th Anniversary

While values rise on the R107 Mercedes-Benz SLs, their successor, the R129, has stayed rather stagnant in the market. This isn’t all too surprising, as it is still riding borderline classic status. But as the years press on and the styling cues continue to evolve, the R129 will certainly establish its place as a desirable classic. This 1997 SL500 is one of the rare 40th Anniversary Editions, which featured six spoke Evo II alloy wheels, Crimson Metallic exterior over parchment leather and chestnut wood trim. With just under 40,000 miles on the clock, this is a good way to stand out from the rest of the R129 crowd.

This car is pretty much perfect for my tastes, except for one thing: the gold badges. All the rage in the 1990s, now this is just a vulgar touch from the past. But that’s a minor issue and one that’s easy to fix. Take care of that, and I’d be quite satisfied tooling around in this SL. The very best SL500s of this vintage may crest $20,000. The 40th Anniversary Edition is merely a trim package, albeit an attractive one in this case. I’d doubt it’s enough to bring a serious premium, but I’m guessing bidding may land somewhere around the $15,000 to $17,000 mark on this one.

Nice car. R129 SL600 Silver Arrow or Renntech SL74 would be in my dream garage, M120 V12 was/is an engineering marvel.

“2-thumbs up”? By day he inspects cars, by night he’s one half of a witty movie reviewing team.

These do have some of the best lines on them ever though. And apparently a very fancy coolant expansion tank too!
