1998 BMW 540i

Our friends over at Jalopnik ran a feature this week regarding the best budget cars ever made. While the focus of that piece was more on cheap and cheerful, how much performance can $5,000 buy these days? More than you would think. This 1998 BMW 540i for sale in New York has done just a touch over 100,000 miles and has the all important 6-speed manual gearbox hooked up to its 4.4 liter V8.

Review: The BMW 540i has it all…very safe and reliable, CD player, power locks and windows and leather interior. The 540i has serious performance with 300 Horsepower. This car has a beautiful rare model color, Canyonrot Metallic and is a very comfortable, enjoyable ride. Well maintained and easy to own! Call today to come in for a test drive, you won’t be disappointed! One rust bubble by license plate screw and rocker panel.

Sure, a $5,000 540i such as this will cost you more to run than the average subcompact, but this car looks straight and the interior is clean, which would lead me to believe it was well cared for. Considering the low cost of entry, you could feasibly run a car like this for a few years for what you may pay for a brand new compact car. Meanwhile, you’d have infinitely more smiles per mile. This car’s particular color combination isn’t my favorite, but I could live with it. With E39 M5 prices on the rise, the 540i 6-speed offers a lower cost alternative while delivering a lot of the charms of that Autobahn stormer.

This is an absolute bargain. A lot of car for the money. I am a bit biased though because I own one.
