1998 Mercedes-Benz E320 4Matic Estate

I’m not a huge fan of television. The last time I was hooked into a series was around eight years ago, when the final episode of The Sopranos aired. Perhaps it was my northeast roots or Mediterranean heritage, but I could relate a lot to the characters and slang thrown around. Recently, one of the most visible vehicles in the show, the Cadillac Escalade owned by Tony Soprano sold for an incredible sum of $119,780. One of the lesser seen cars of the series, however, was Carmela Soprano’s Mercedes-Benz E-class estate. When the series began, she was first seen driving a post-facelift W124 E320 estate, progressing to a pre-facelift W210 E320 estate and then to a post-facelift W210, before moving on to an early Porsche Cayenne. This 1998 E320 4Matic for sale in Florida is similar to that second E-class we saw in the season, in the same Brilliant Silver over gray leather livery.

The W210 E-class was considered quite radical when it debuted, eschewing traditional Mercedes-Benz styling cues that had been around for decades in search of a new, fresh look. Almost twenty years on, these mid-sized Benzes haven’t aged so bad and the W210 estate has a bit more breadvan look than other E-classes which preceded or succeeded it. The might not be as legendary or reliable as the W124 E-class it replaced, but they are a perfectly fine second hand purchase opportunity. The asking price for this car is a bit on the high side, as most E320s of this vintage are hovering in the $6,000 to $8,000 range these days. The 4Matic system on these W210s were a lot less troublesome than the earlier systems on W124s, so it is less likely you’ll have an issue surrounding the drivetrain. If this car passes a PPI and you could work a bit of a deal on it, this would make a pleasant alternative to the problem of the common SUV.

  1. Very reliable and cheap to maintain….this one is in nice condition. Too bad that it is poorly optioned.

  2. I put 250,000 kms on a 2000 E320 4Matic wagon. Drivetrain was very robust but in every other way it was crap. The electrics were constantly a problem and it rusted worse than any other car I’ve ever owned. In this day and age of galvanization you should not have to put new front fenders on a German built luxury car.

  3. I too have heard these described as true rust buckets, which is pretty scandalous for MB to have made them so. But perhaps this example has lead a charmed life thanks to its provenance. It’s too bad that that Hyundai whatever came along and copied 90% of this car’s design. But this looks very nice, I admit — for what it is. I’d prefer a late year predecessor. At this time here in 1998 MB hadn’t yet gone into insane territory in terms of glitzy tech and embarassing design inside and out — but oh, what sorrow is about to break in merely a few years. A tidal wave.
