It’s been a little while since we wrote up our last M Coupe, a beautiful S52 powered Estoril Blue example. And while those early M Coupes are a great deal these days for a fun performance car with plenty of personality, most enthusiasts really want to get their hands on the later cars that came with the S54 motor. There weren’t many other changes to the 2001 and 2002 M Coupes besides this motor swap, but that was enough to make the already good E36/8 all the more entertaining. These later build cars carry a premium due to their increased performance and exclusivity and seem to come up for sale less than the early cars do. Today, there is a brilliant looking Sapphire Black over black leather example on Ebay:

2002 BMW Z3 M Coupe with S54 M Motor. 112k miles Saphire Black over black leather. This collectible BMW was just completely and profesionally serviced by one of the most respected BMW specialists including a BMW Inspection II Service (including valve adjustment). Both the brake fluid and coolant replacement services were performed. Rear subframe bushings were replaced and upgraded with Ireleland Engineering bushings. There is a TC Kline single adjustable suspension kit. Rear shocks were just replaced with Bilstein sports to eliminate noise. Rear brakes (rotors and pads) were also replaced. New front control arm bushings installed. New Bridgestone Pole Position S04 tires, front and rear. The only shortcoming is the sunroof is inoperative as the hardware kit is on special order (back order) from BMW and will be provided to the new owner upon receipt
I have all documentation and service history including the original window sticker. Oil changes every 5k miles. All keys and manuals. Always in California. Clear California title in hand.
You will not find a better maintained “turn key” M Coupe anywhere. This car drives phenomenally well and will bring lots of smiles and thumbs up 🙂 This is for the serious buyer and true collector. No disappointments.

If you really want one of these cars, this is exactly how to buy it; from a conscientious enthusiast. With the major service updates complete and maintenance records available, the mystery that surrounds many of these Ms that have changed hands multiple times is gone. Modifications are limited to some suspension work, furthering the appeal of this mostly original car. Black over black wouldn’t be my favorite color combination, but it suits the design quite well and looks pretty clean and mean. The pricing on this particular model is higher given the miles present; ideally, we’d like to see this car around $25,000 – but at that point, you’re arguing over the cost of only some of the service records, so while you may pass this car off as too pricey, you could just as easily spend the same money on a cheaper one that you’d have to quickly fix. All in all, given the limited supply of these cars, if this is the color combination you like it may just be the one.
