2003 BMW X5 4.6is

BMW would take a gamble in the late 1990s by unleashing the X5 “Sports Activity Vehicle” onto the public. Would this truck live up to the “Ultimate Driving Machine” tagline? Well, after a friend’s parents purchased an X5 4.4i shortly after it’s introduction, I had only one answer to that question: yes. I was amazed how car like the X5 handled. It was as if it was a 5 series on stilts, but the increased height had little effect on how tight it hugged the curves. There is even an E53 X5 in the GCFSB fleet, as our owner, Dan, recently purchased a clean, low mileage 2003 X5 4.4i to replace a Volvo XC70.

This 4.6is represents the top dog of the X5 range for 2003, with 335 horsepower routed through all four 20 inch wheels. It’s not an optimal combination for off-roading, but it’s doubtful this black on black example for sale in Oregon would leave the tarmac for extended periods of time.

Here it is! The 2003 BMW X5is is the king of the Sport Utility Vehicle world! Class, style, luxury, reliability, but most of all, a real head turner! The X5 4.6is is the absolute top of the line version of SUV that BMW offered in 03. Yet, it’s style still stands alone against anything brand new on the streets. Rare to find in black on black. Even more rare to find one with such low miles. Don’t lose your chance at the opportunity to have this amazing machine in your driveway!

Specs and options include 4.6 liter 340hp V8, automatic 5-speed transmission with sequential sport shift, all the time all wheel drive, 20 inch standard BMW wheels, 4-wheel ABS, keyless entry, power steering, power seats, power locks, power windows, power mirrors, moon roof, A/C, heated front and rear seats, heated mirrors, duel climate control, dual exhaust, auto dimming door mirrors, memory seats, reclining rear seats, telescopic steering wheel, auto dimming rear view mirror, garage door transmitter, navigation, 12 speaker surround sound system, Xenon headlights, automatic headlights, headlight cleaners, rain sensing wipers, front and rear parking sensors, outside temp display, wood grain trim interior, auto leveling suspension, speed sensing steering, Toyo Proxy tires, tinted windows, duel chrome tipped exhaust, sport lip kit, and much more!

Admittedly, we don’t feature a lot of SUVs here on GCFSB. We have our favorites, most notably the Mercedes-Benz Geländewagen and Volkswagen Touareg V10 TDI. However, I always thought the original BMW X5 was an attractive machine, especially when kitted out like this, in 4.6is form, in black, with tinted windows. It’s not the most purposeful truck, but it sure is mean looking. The 4.6is was replaced in 2004 by the 4.8is, so this helps keep the price down a bit, as it’s not exactly the ultimate E53 X5. Considering the mileage, we’d suspect somewhere in the $9,000 to $12,000 range is about on the mark for this SAV.

I’m surprised this one doesn’t come standard with the sport seats! Our 4.4i has sport package and has them. Then again, I’m surprised at what options are standard and those that aren’t even on ours, like heated seats!

I added a link in the post to the gallery of our 4.4i if anyone is interested.

I don’t wish to be snarky, because I love what you guys do, but to this quote I say: Amen!

I guess I can add some personal experience. I’ve bought my 03 4.6is black on black less than 6 months ago and I love it. It was an impulse buy but I had good feeling about it. Mine had 94k miles with 2 previous owners and $25k in records (dealers service inflated prices) and I got extremely good deal on it. Mine is in much better shape and it does have sport seats but no NAV screen. I also thought each 4.6is comes with sport seats?
Although I’m getting only 16mpg, the grin on my face is permanent. It simply accelerates, brakes and handles much better than I expected. I truly wish they put this engine in 03 M sport 540 to make it truly special for the last year of production.
Imagine 340HP/350FTLB in a car that weighs 200lbs less than M5 and has less unsprung weight due to lighter forged M par wheels. It still wouldn’t quite match M5 but it’d much closer in performance.
