2008 Audi A4 3.2 quattro Avant S-Line Titanium Package

Following up on yesterday’s super-loaded A4 I’ve moved forward a decade to the last of the B7 series cars. Between the B5 and B7 generation cars, Audi made significant improvements to their small car, with more upscale and tech-heavy interiors and impressive power output from the new line of motors. While the A4 was introduced with the 172 horsepower 12 valve V6, by the B7 generation the lump had grown to 3.2 liters with the new “FSi” direct injection. While the B5 generation had introduced 5 valve technology as we saw yesterday, the B6/7 went back to 4 valves per a cylinder with variable intake manifolds. The result was impressive; despite the small bump in displacement, the 3.2 FSi motor produced 255 horsepower; more than the B5 S4 came to market with. Audi backed up the performance with its new “sport” designation, the S-Line package. That added the 1BE sport suspension, the sport steering wheel (with paddle shifters for Tiptronic-equipped models), and special aluminum trim. If there was one downside to the S-Line package, it was that you could only get it with black interiors – unlike the vibrant color combination we saw yesterday. To make up for that in some regards, Audi then offered an even more premium exterior option; the Titanium Package. Selecting that option would equip your A4 with 18 inch quattro GmbH Ronal multi-spoke alloys in Titanium and blacked out trim both inside and out. Generally, these S-Line Titanium Avants are considered the most desirable A4 Avants made – and for some, they’re more special than even the S4 Avant:

Like yesterday’s example, this Avant is white, though Pearlescent had been removed from the lineup by the time we got to the B7. Replacing it was Ibis White, arguably one of the best looking pure white colors out there. Also like yesterday’s fully loaded A4, the original purchaser went deep into the cash reserves to order this spec A4. A 3.2 Avant equipped with Tiptronic transmission started at $39,400 before options – a full $10,000 more than the sedan from 1998. The Convenience Package gave you Home Link, auto dimming mirrors and bi-xenon lights for $1,700. The S-Line Package gave you the aforementioned upgrades for $900, and moving up to the Titanium Package increased that 50% again for $500 more. Navigation was a shocking $2,100 option with an additional $500 to connect you Bluetooth. Another $550 went to keeping your tush warm with the Cold Weather Package. There were a couple of non-selected options, but not many here – and before destination charges this A4 was brushing CPO S4 Avant territory at $45,650. It’s not much of a surprise then that given their relatively high desirability and the lower miles of this example, the asking price is over $20,000. That’s a lot of scratch for a nearly 8 year old A4 and one could argue that a cheaper S4 Avant would be a better performer and more special. There are some non-original details, too – the red calipers, window tint and rear badging aren’t original. But these Titanium Package A4s are often referred to as “Unicorns” by the Audi community; their up front costs kept the number sold down and not many come to market. The price seems outrageous but my guess is that someone is lusting over this very package right now.

While I find this sufficiently lust-worthy (having a B7 A4 3.2 Quattro 6sp myself, although a sedan not an avant and having had a B7 A4 2.0T Avant) I feel like the price is too high. For this money one could get a S-Line C6 A6 Avant which has the same engine, same transmission but a far nicer interior (and possibly lower miles). Some of these cars came with paddle shifters and have superior navigation systems as well as back-up cameras and parking sensors. 08s come on handsome 18inch 5 spoke s-line wheels and 07s and 08s can be had with multi-spoke 19 inch wheels.

While I agree the B7 A4 is sportier than the C6 A6, having both and driving them back to back, for $20K the C6 is the better deal and is probably rarer due to the limited amount of avants imported.

@Maxwell, I’ve written up a few A6 Avants and agree you get more car for your money. The last duo – a pair of 3.0T models which I would generally consider much nicer and more capable than the B7, were only a few thousand more than the ask of this car despite being newer. I recently drove a A6 3.2 Avant, and have to say I wasn’t thrilled with some of the electronic wizardry. I’m sure you get used to it, but the interface wasn’t hugely intuitive. But, I’d agree that the interior is substantially nicer in the A6 v. the A4.

@Carter, I agree the electronic interface isn’t intuitive, however you get used to it quickly. More importantly the MMI system in the C6 A6 is far better than the pre-MMI (I think its RNS and CD based?) found in the B7, especially when it comes to using an iPod or entering in addresses.

Furthermore the C6 A6 can be had with a heated steering wheel and keyless entry, options I don’t believe were ever offered on the B7.

@Maxwell – thanks for the feedback; an A6 3.0T Avant is on my radar as a possible replacement for our current two wagon household. Overall I enjoyed driving the A6 Avant. I actually really like the B8s too, but the pricing again is quite high for reasonable examples.

It’s OK guys, the dealer must legally lower his price by 10% for having written everything in ALL CAPS.

It’s not the lemon law –that hasn’t existed for eons, if ever. It’s the douche law.
