Since it’s launch, I’ve had a bit of a love/hate relationship with the S5. From an enthusiast standpoint starting with 1980s Audis, the S5 on paper sounds like a dream; 340hp V8 mated to a 6 speed manual driving all four wheels in a grand-touring coupe. But when I saw the S5, to me it just looked too big and too heavy. I wasn’t a fan of the big grill look, the chrome bits, or the winky-eye LEDs. Since then I feel that the S5 has grown on me or I’ve softened, because I think it’s aging fairly well all things considered. Five years on, I’m still not a fan of the LEDs and I think the post 2010 refresh really improved the look, but there is no denying that the earlier cars can be had for a reasonable sum and offer a lot of car for the money. Case in point is today’s 2008 model:

As these cars go, the Quartz Grey Metallic and Magma leather combination is about as good as it gets for me. Both classy and flashy at the same time, the interior of these cars it truly a nice place to be. Performance is as good as you’ll ever need on the road, and in a pinch these cars do fairly well in stock form on the track, though they do tend to overwhelm their front tires and brakes with heavy use. The noise the 4.2 produces is intoxicating and addictive, and with room for 4 this is truly a great touring coupe. $27,000 seems about par for the market considering the mileage, but this car looks to be quite clean and the unique color combination is the one to have. For a fairly new car, these S cars offer a tremendous bang for the buck!

No worse than the equivilant M cars, Jeff. Big deal is the chain tensioners that require pulling the motor on higher mileage models, but it’s a pretty known quantity and you reseal the motor at the same time.
