2011 BMW 1M Coupe

I’ve been on a bit of a yellow kick as of late, but even I was surprised when I came upon this BMW 1M. To date, I had not seen a BMW Individual painted 1M Coupe and to spy one in Dakar Yellow seemed especially amazing. Even more amazing was the price; despite only 35,000 miles on the clock, this E87 seemed priced to move at only $50,000 – some $20,000 less than other examples on the market. It was clearly worth a bit of further investigation…

I wanted to know if this car was part of the Individual program and was originally painted in Dakar Yellow. Obviously, that affects the value tremendously. But the 1M was built at the Leipzig plant, which doesn’t do Individual colors. It would have taken extra effort, and shipping the car to Munich, to get the Individual paint. Despite that, some examples do exist though their authenticity is question. This is one of them, as the VIN check reveals it was one of the 326 Alpine White III (300) examples produced. The color change looks well done overall, but I think the repaint probably hurts the collector value if that’s what you’re interested in. So, too, do the modifications; the painted M359 Competition Package wheels, the aftermarket and extraordinarily expensive exhaust system which leaves me wondering how you get past emissions with no cats, the cut up roof and the carbon fiber tack-on bits.

But if you’re buying the 1M to drive, maybe that doesn’t matter to you, and you’ll pocket the serious savings over a pristine example. This really is the cheapest 1M I’ve seen for sale anytime recently, and with the others not looking like they’ll fall in value soon, it might even be worth its weight to buy, drive for some time and then pay to return to stock form. You could still come out ahead if the market holds on these pocket rockets.

Seller was sure to avoid any pictures to question the paint. Note the absence of any under hood shots…. which would reveal the repaint.

I just can’t wrap my head around the value of these cars. It was a very ugly generation (thankfully fixed with the 2 series), and yet they command almost the price of a new M2?

Not this car! The engine was removed for the color change. You would not be able to tell it’s been painted. I’m not a fan of the mods or the color, but everything was done right. And Dakar yellow does look pretty good on the 1M. The current owner may not even know it used to be white.

The original owner put $65k into the paint and mods, then sold it after a year with 5k miles for $75k.

It may not be a collectors item, but it would be an awesome driver.

But then again, if it’s not a collectible, why wouldn’t you just buy a new M2…

I’m more concerned that someone cut off the roof and replaced it with a CF one. I don’t know how you do that aftermarket and not compromise rigidity and integrity of the structure.
