2015 Porsche Cayman S

From the first time I saw the 981 I was smitten. The redesign seemed to bring both the Boxster and Cayman into their own better than with previous designs, but it was the Cayman that really caught my eye. The slightly longer wheelbase seems to work very well with the body. It also has a Ferrari 430 look about it, though I’m honestly not sure how I feel about that since the 430 is far from my favorite Ferrari (even if it’s an improvement on its predecessor). Regardless, I like the 981 Cayman quite a bit. That the model culminated with the absolutely wonderful GT4 has drawn me to it even further.

I don’t tend to feature them all that often, but this one caught my eye. It’s more subtlety pretty than something that’ll stop you in your tracks. The dark blue is elegant, rather than flashy, and the total package seems a desirable one. Here we have a Dark Blue Metallic 2015 Porsche Cayman S, located in St. Louis, with Luxor Beige interior and 39,365 miles on it. It’s equipped with power sport seats and a 6-speed manual transmission. Excellent!

2004 Volkswagen R32

Update 12/23/2017 – This R32 is back with almost no changes a year and a half later – except the price. When I looked at it in June 2016 the seller was hoping for $16,700. It’s now up to $17,400. Will this bold strategy pay off?

For a few generations, Volkswagen fans were denied the cream of the crop for Volkswagen products. It took several years to finally get the original GTi to these shores, and then it wasn’t quite as hot as the European version. The second edition might have sported twin cams and 16 valves, but Euro customers got the addtional option of a supercharged, all-wheel drive version. There were plenty of cool options missing from the U.S. lineup in the 3rd generation, too – including the 2.9 liter VR6 Variant Syncro. So there was a bit of rejoicing finally when the all-wheel drive hot hatch was finally added to the U.S. lineup after the initial launch in 2003. Sporting the same 3.2 VR6 found in the TT, unlike the Mk.1 TT it was 6-speed manual only. It was also only available as a 2-door model, with special body kit unique to the R32 and dual exhaust to help announce its sporting intentions. With the best part of 240 horsepower on tap, it certainly seemed like the ultimate Golf and the sound generated from the narrow-angle 6 was mesmerizing. While heavy weight meant it wasn’t considerably quicker than the 1.8T models, it nonetheless has secured a spot in U.S. fans hearts as the top trump from the Mk.4 generation:

White Christmas Double Take: 1995 BMW M3

Update 1/25/2018 – the first of this duo has dropped in price from $19,997 to $17,997.

Recently I found myself looking through some old car literature I had amassed over the years. In particular, I was completely enamored with the brand-new E36 M3 when it launched on U.S. shores. I’m not sure why, but of all the E36 variants that were produced, that first-year M has always stuck out to me as the most desirable in the lineup. And now as these cars are on the verge of being considered “antique” and with the E30 market still silly (and the E46 market rising), these early Coupes seem like a great balance of driving, collector-potential and somewhat reasonable pricing.

I say ‘somewhat’ because sellers have steadily been raising the bar to the point where it almost feels like price fixing. When I looked for ’95s on eBay the other day, I started laughing – there were five listed, and their prices were all within $1,000 of each other – and none were cheap. So with that in mind today I’m looking at twin Alpine White ’95s. They’re almost identically equipped. They’re priced within $2 of each other. That’s not a misprint – only a small coffee at Dunkin’ Donuts divides the asks on these two. But there’s a huge difference in mileage; some 60,000 between these two. So clearly the one with lower mileage is automatically the better bet, right?

Not so fast…

1963 Porsche 356B 1600S Coupe

1963 Porsche 356B 1600S Coupe

I’ve been looking at a lot of new blues among Porsches lately. Or sometimes old blues on new cars (and I haven’t even posted all of them!). Let’s turn the clock back to look at an old blue on an old car. These are always fun to revisit if for no better reason than as a data point for those considering their paint-to-sample options. It’s always worthwhile to see what these very rare colors look like on an actual car. We’ve even had the pleasure of seeing this particular vintage blue on a recent GT3 RS. All the better for understanding our options.

Here it is on its original model: an Oslo Blue 1963 Porsche 356B 1600S Coupe, located in Long Beach, with 120,200 miles on it.

2008 Porsche 911 GT3 RS

2008 Porsche 911 GT3 RS

How much do you like green cars? The impetus for the question will be somewhat obvious, though it isn’t just the exterior that raises the question. This is a Green 2008 Porsche 911 GT3 RS, located in Ohio, with 10,016 miles on it. Typically this exterior color is referred to as RS Green since it was first made available from 2007-2008 for the GT3 RS, though as we can see the CoA lists it simply as Green. Many also call it Porsche Green. It is paint code 2D8.

Back to my original question. RS Green is a pretty great shade of green. For a car like the GT3 RS it works incredibly well. It also is very rare to come across one. This particular RS is…extra green. The interior too has taken on that green hue with green stitching throughout along with a variety of trim pieces in the dash, doors, and center console painted that same bright green. It’s a lot of green so you’re going to have to love it.

The other reason you’ll really need to like green is the price. As I said these are rare among the already relatively rare GT3 RS and with an asking price of $325K you’re gonna have to pay a lot for that rare green.
