3.2 Preservation: 1986 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa & 1988 911 Carrera Coupe

When it comes to classic, air-cooled 911s, the sky is the limit when it comes to choice. From Turbos to Targas, early SWBs variants to kitted out Sonderwunsch models, there’s a 911 for everyone. My favorite is the 3.2 Carrera. My first 911 experience was behind the wheel of a 1984 Carrera Coupe as a teenager. To this day, that drive is still vivid in my mind. You can still find good, driver quality 3.2s out there for reasonable sums, but to get a choice example, expect to shell out a lot more. The following two 3.2s are of the latter group, low mileage examples that are fit for a concours. First up is this 1986 Targa for sale in California.

Of all the 3.2s, Targas tend to be the most undervalued. Perhaps it’s because those who want a convertible just go the cabriolet route and the coupe is really reserved for those purists wanting the ultimate 911 experience. This Targa is certainly priced at the top of the market for this model, and at this price, you can get into a very nice 3.2 Coupe. I’m not a Targa hater, but I’m not certain I’d pull the trigger at this price on one. However, our next 3.2, a 1988 Coupe has me awe struck.

If you told me I could have any 911 in the world at this moment, it would be this car. Sure, there are plenty of Turbos, RSRs and the like to ogle over, but there’s something I find appealing about a 3.2 Coupe. For me and many others, it’s the 911 at its best. At close to $70,000, we’re yet again flirting with the top of the market for these 911s, but when you consider that figure won’t get you close to the list price on a new 911, perhaps a classic like this suddenly looks that much more attractive.

I owned an “88 in that color combo. Mine had around 96,000 miles and was 100% dependable. You don’t need to spend that kind of money to get a good G50. I know someone who also has an “88 with 200,000 miles. Just get a good one and a P.P.I. Depending on how nice you want I would think in the $25-40K range. I sold mine. I haven’t driven a 993 but at the listed price I would want to compare and see if I preferred that.
