10K Friday – Please Be Real: 2000 BMW M5

If Nate’s story of E28 M5 ownership inspired you, but you missed days the cheap E28 M5s in reasonable shape, what are you to do? Well, the E34 is still fairly affordable if you want most of the same experience as the E28 with some updates and refinement (and, more weight); but the smart money right now is the E39 M5. With 400 horsepower, a 6-speed manual and a great looking shape, the E39 was an instant classic and raised the sports-sedan bar to a whole new level. For the first time, the U.S. got the full-fat M5, too – a nice change from the semi-diluted E28 and E34 models. Prices on these sedans have been hovering around the $20,000 mark for good examples but are continuing to slide; if you’re not looking for the best example, though, you can score some serious deals – such as today’s $5 short of $11,000 2000 example:

Does it have a few more miles than some other examples? Yes, and it’s half the price of many of the asks too. Personally, I can’t believe this car hasn’t sold. Condition, other than some stone chips and minor scratches, seems overall pretty good. There’s minor clouding on the headlights that could be corrected, but overall the exterior looks superior to most E39s these days. The interior, too, looks to be in good shape, with not much wear showing on the leather seats. No accidents, recent service, non-bald tires….I’m not sure what I’m missing, but this car looks like a screaming performance deal. What more could you want for $10,995?

wow…as an owner of a MY00 E39 this is a smoking deal if the car is as its presented..
it does not look like TiSi to me…more like Bluewater or Silverstone…..but might just be my eyes…
Nappa leather/Executive trim…does not look like it has any of the options that were offered in the 1st year cars….no extended leather, PDC or M-Audio….none the less….very very nice car!
the cluster has been changed as it has grey gauges…pixel disease!
as long as the PPI checks out and the service records are all in……
I’d buy this if I did not have one already….MY00 get a bad rap…unwarranted

I keep asking myself what’s wrong with this car? The current lowest price on autotrader for a 2000 M5 is $8800, but that car has 169k miles on it. There are plenty of others with more miles than the one in this ad that have higher asking prices.

There are some cosmetic issues apparent, but nothing that would bring the price down this far. Windshield, rear bumper repair (need to check for damage to the support structure), paint touch-up, wheel refinish, etc… Personally, I’d also have to switch out the tires to something else, but not everyone is as tire picky as I am.

If I were in the market for an E39 M5, I would schedule an in-person inspection ASAP and be prepared to hit “Buy It Now” on the spot if everything checks out.

KevinR, that was the dialogue I kept having….what am I missing? Looks like a stellar deal even if it isn’t the most desirable of the E39 M5s.

@Carter why less desirable???….other than older?
performance wise the entire E39 M5 run is the same..
clear markers, angel-eyes, bigger NAVI screen, different steering wheel & grey instrument cluster..
    all cosmetics…
they can have my MY00 when they pry my cold dead fingers from the steering wheel!….LOL

MDriver, mostly for me, it’s the color combination that makes it not the most desirable. I’d take 3 or 4 other colors before silver on one of these, but maybe that’s just me.
