Feature Listing – 1991 BMW 535i Dinan Turbo

In the 1980s and early 1990s, Dinan was still on the cutting edge of performance tuning. As with Reeves Callaway, Steve Dinan had started turbocharging BMWs to create supercar-slaying sedans and coupes. At that point, Dinan was a lesser-known tuner than the likes of Alpina and Hartge, but the results of their turbocharging the S38 in the BMW M6 notably gained the car the nickname “The Annihilator”. That should tell you something of the level to which Dinan Cars brings their creations to whilst retaining the original attributes of the base car. It’s a special combination that resulted in Dinan being incorporated into the BMW dealer network; today, cruise down to your dealership and you can buy Dinan products and software upgrades for just about any model and retain your warranty. Because of that connection, an appreciation for early Dinan cars continues to grow though in general they remain more affordable than their German tuner counterparts. They are, however, just as rare to come across – especially when they come in the condition of today’s 1991 535i, one of the last of Dinan’s inline-6 turbo creations:

More Information
Clean as a whistle 1991 BMW 535i with intercooled DINAN turbo kit. Complete AC Schnitzer body kit. New 3″ turbo back exhaust. Dinan short throw shift kit and pedal covers. 65k miles. 6k in recent receipts. OZ multi piece 19″ wheels. Car is ready for a new home. Prefer local pickup but could arrange shipping at buyers expense.

Compared to the 540i M-Sport or M5, most 535is look a bit like an upscale taxi. The same can not be said for this example, which looks stunning in double black with the AC Schnitzer body kit. In many ways, coupled with the large OZ Racing wheels it reminds me of the 540i Turbo that Dinan campaigned in the SCCA World Challenge racing. Condition on this car is very clean and the modifications are all top-notch pieces. The results of the Dinan modifications are reportedly between 350 and 400 horsepower depending on state of tune; enough motivation to harass any M5 owner. But unlike even the fairly rare E34 M5, you’re not likely to roll across another of these special Dinan-modded E34s very often; only a handful of these cars are floating around, and they remain quite a potent alternative to the normal E34 choices. While it’s very difficult to say that early Dinan cars will appreciate in the same manner that Alpina and Hartge models have, there’s no doubt that there will remain a base of devoted fans always looking for a clean and well presented early Dinan car. This is certainly one of the best that we’ve seen and is a fitting tribute to what has become the go-to tuner for BMWs. Steve Dinan has said that he builds cars that are high-end luxury cars, but also leave their owners with a satisfying feeling that they’re behind the wheel of a hot rod. This turned up E34 can’t leave you with any other impression.

why am I commenting, I have no real knowledge of it? I am compelled by the notion of a straight six monster. I would prefer it without the wing and tint, and the addition of color in the tail lights. I love a sleeper and this one looks promising with a few visual downgrades.

I know it’s owners right to modify car to its own taste but I truly feel that this car would look better and sell easier without fake front license plate and rear wing and with nice M pars or BBS’s instead of OZ wheels.

Great looking car, appears to be well maintained with low miles – nice find. I agree that I would prefer a set of OEM wheels such as M Parallels but that is an easy fix. Anyone know if E39 M5 wheels or E36 19″ M3 wheels might fit?

Yes, keyboard fat finger, E46 vice E36.

Wow. The E60 rims look great, albeit I am not a fan of the fully ‘slammed” look. If ride height were closer to Euro those would look great.
