Wednesday Wheels: Quattro Audi Favorites

Much like Volkswagen, Audi went from a fairly conservative wheel lineup through 1995 to some of the best looking wheels on the market. Consequently, there have been countless knockoffs that have sprouted up at budget prices; they always look appealing price wise, but never seem to perfectly replicate the original wheels. For my money and car, I’d always choose the OEM options over the replicas, which means looking to the used wheel market instead of brand new wheels – luckily, there are lots of folks who like to remove their high-quality great looking wheels for something…well, not OEM. Take a look at today’s offerings from Audi then:

YOU CAN HAVE A MATCHING SET FOR A GREAT DISCOUNT!!

The RS4 and RS6 wheels are undoubtedly one of the most knocked-off designs, and poor quality versions adorn everything from budget beater A4s to Golfs. Audi even knocked off it’s own wheel, with the “Celebration” wheel that appeared on both the A4 and S8, but the real deal big-offset wheels are the ones to get if you can fit them. These are great looking wheels with only a light amount of damage at a great price. Looking for something a little better and more cutting edge? How about these S5/RS4 wheels:

Big, big, big. These wheels are aggressive and great looking. They really help to set the S5 apart from the competition, and look fantastic dressing up earlier S models. Speedline manufactured these wheels so they’re assured to be high quality. A bit too aggressive? How about a set of the popular S4 and S5 “Peelers”:

Year: 2012
Model: S5 S-line “Peelers”
Diameter: 19″
Width: 9″
Bolt Pattern: 5 x 112
Offset: ET 33
Condition: Used
Tires: Not Included

CLICK FOR DETAILS: Audi S5 S-line Wheels on eBay

I have a nearly brand new set of 19″ OEM Audi factory SLINE speedline wheels for sale that were recently removed from a Audi S5. The 2008 forward A5 and S5 vehicles use a lower offset (33mm) hence these wheels will fit the RS4 and RS6 vehicles as well. Additionally the Q5 uses a 33mm offset so these are perfect for Q5 as well. These wheels are a great way to update/upgrade your car while improving the appearance and increasing the value of your car. OEM Audi center caps will be included.

Wheels: 9X19, offset is 33mm

The wheels are in excellent condition with no curb scrapes. They have the original OEM factory “hyper-silver” finish and have not been refinished. There are a few tiny little marks simply from moving/storing them but they are near mint. Bolt pattern is 5X112 and the offset is 33mm. I receive a substantial fedex shipping discount which I pass onto you so shipping will be between $30 -$35 per wheel within the U.S. and if outside the U.S. please contact me. If you need the wheels sooner don’t hesitate to contact me. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to contact me. If you want to see them in Newport Beach, CA please contact me. Free local pickup.

These wheels are also pretty aggressive but a tad more understated than the split RS wheels. The “Peeler” design has appeared now on all of the S and RS variants, and even has been slightly modified and reborn on the Golf R in the “Talledega”. Honestly, they all look great. Like the last set, they are Speedline made so high quality. These appear to be as close to new as possble, so it’ll be interesting to see where they end up. Too big for your roads? How about some evergreen Avus wheels:

Year: 2005-2007
Model: S4 “Avus”

These are a perrenial favorite amongst Audi folks, and appear on many earlier models. There are several different versions of the Avus wheel (I count 6, I believe) but they’re all great in their own ways. They’ll dress them up any older big-body Audi you can fit them on, and even some Volkswagens. Tonal manufactured these wheels and they’re fairly high quality. These appear to be in pretty good condition overall but are a tad bit pricey honestly, I’d hold out for a set for a few hundred dollars less.

Which are your favorites?

Forgotten 44s – 1987 Porsche 944S and 1989 Porsche 944 2.7

509

If you want a water-cooled, front engined Porsche collectable, there are several bulletproof standbys to look at. There’s of course the always popular 944 Turbo and Turbo S, a performance bargain that’s sure not to last much longer. Then there’s the curvy 968 and it’s lesser appreciated brother, the 944 S2. Enthusiasts in the know love them and seek out clean examples that challenge and exceed Turbo pricing. Those on a budget or less interested in the box-flared 44s look towards the short production 924S – a hidden gem of affordable Porsche ownership. Heck, even the lowly 924 Turbo has a cult following, as do the niche models like the 924 Carrera GT and GTS. But for your hard-earned money, there are two very rare models that 944 enthusiasts seem to forget. These models are slightly more affordable than their more-sought after brethren, but as the market climbs it may just be these lesser known models that appreciate more. These models are the 1987-1988 944 S 16V and the 1989 only 944 2.7. Today there are two clean examples, one of each model, on Ebay. Let’s start with the 16 Ventiler:

RARE FIND! 1987 Porsche 944 S with only 96K orginal miles. With only 2 previous owners in the last 26 years this car comes with a long list of service records that date back to the original owner, Engine was rebuilt few years ago from previous owner, we just recently serviced this Porsche with New A/C Compresser, New battery, New Windshield, New brakes, New Power Steering pump, New Fuel Filter, New Fuel Pump, New Plugs, Wire and Caps, New Transmission Seals, New Gasket Seals, New Axles Seals and much more! This Porsche is a beauty and a rare find.

This 1987 Porsche 944 S comes with a clean CarFax and AutoCheck Report. We offer Nationwide Shipping as well. For more pics and information, please visit us at www.AutoByDesigns.com

Despite being at an Ebay dealer, this car appears to have records to trace it’s maintenance history. The white over grey is a great combination in my mind. With the special “S” alloys, these cars stand a little apart from the regular 944 look, though they miss the Turbo-look body kit of the S2. Some might not like that, but the earlier look of the 944s is a tad bit lighter if not as clean. The 16V motor was a treat, and received a host of upgrades over the standard 944 – magnesium engine bits, different transmission, brakes, computers, suspension and a 190hp set these cars apart and slotted them nicely between the 944/924S and 944 Turbo. With only about 3300 1987 Ss and 8000 overall imported to the U.S., they’re not quite as rare as the later S2s but more rare than the Turbo or 944. Looking for something a little less common, then? How about this 1989 944 2.7:

509

The 1989 944 was the last of the breed. While the Turbo and S2 would carry over for a bit longer until the launch of the 968, the last of the 8Vs received a few upgrades as it’s swan song. Chief among these was the bump in displacement to 2.7 liters, a net of only a few horsepower over the 2.5 but a jump in torque that made the 2.7 more fun to enjoy than the earlier cars heading out of corners. Guards Red over black is a standby with 1980s Porsches, so perhaps this one floats your boat:

509

Year: 1989
Model: 944
Engine: 2.7 liter inline-4
Transmission: 5-speed manual
Mileage: 133,000 mi

1989 Porsche 944 NA. Guards Red with black leather interior, 5 spd, sunroof, cold a/c, am/fm cassette. The car has been well maintained and I have of the maintaince records since I bought it in 2007and also from the previous owner. There is over 10 years of documented maintenance history. Engine runs strong and clean. Paint is in good condition. all lines clean and straight. Car is driven daily to work and appointments. Serious inquiries only. (954) 214-4560.

Like the S, this car seems like a good deal with records available. Either way, for a pinch under $9,000 you can jump into a lower mile, maintained classic Porsche. They’re cheaper to run than their flat-6 and V8 counterparts, and while neither is as exciting as the Turbo or S2 models both will surely give you smiles down the road. If it were my money, I’d sport for the 944S and enjoy a few trips to redline, plus I like the stealthy white/grey color combo. There are countless “special versions” of the water cooled front engine Porsches, but these both are great drivers that you could hold onto and will likely appreciate – both in value and in driving experience!

Which would you choose?

You know what’s embarrassing when you’re considered a motoring enthusiast? Running out of gas. My wife used to laugh at how overactive the fuel warning lights are on both Volkswagen and Audi products; the V8 Quattro I owned would warn you with nearly 100 miles of range of your imminent fuel shortage. But of course at Autobahn speeds, at last few gallons can be gobbled up in minutes, not hours, so having an additional 10 gallons of fuel on board could be the difference between a large fine and a fine day motoring!

Tuner Tuesday Part 2: 2009 BMW M5 6 Speed Dinan

509

This 2009 BMW M5 isn’t really a full Dinan model, but rather a desirable car which has undergone some factory-approved Dinan modifications. Purists rejoiced when the manual option was re-added to the M5, but few seem to come up for sale. This particular model looks just about showroom fresh in metallic black hearkening back to it’s Grandfather E28. But what resides under the hood of this monster is decidedly not from an E28; with nearly double the cylinders and double the horsepower, these M5s will and can take on just about anything you can bring to it. The manual replaces the jerky-at-low-speeds and harsh shifting (not to mention expensive to service) SMG transmission, making the black interior that much more inviting:

509

Year: 2009
Model: M5
Engine: 5.0 liter V10
Transmission: 6-speed
Mileage: 65,188 mi
Price: $39,995

CLICK FOR DETAILS: 2009 BMW M5 Dinan at Coventry Motor Car

EXCEPTIONAL EXAMPLE OF A WELL CARED FOR M5, 6-SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION, ALL DINAN ENHANCEMENTS PURCHASED AND INSTALLED AT BMW OF BRIDGEPORT TOTALING IN EXCESS OF $11,000. (INVOICE INCLUDED) DINAN HIGH FLOW THROTTLE BODIES, DINAN HIGH FLOW MASS AIR METER, DINAN INTAKE ASSEMBLIES, DINAN FREE FLOW EXHAUST, DINAN STAGE 3 SOFTWARE, HEADS UP DISPLAY, NAVIGATION, COMFORT ACCESS, COLD WEATHER, MICHELIN PS2’S, ALL MANUALS, 2-KEYS, CLEAN CARFAX

To me these cars still seem like they just arrived on the market, so it’s amazing to me that they’re priced below $40,000 now. For mid-range 3 series money, this is a lot more car and a lot more special than run of the mill 3er. If you really want to announce your presence in the office park, the Dinan exhaust will do that quite nicely for you. Long term the 6 speed manual is the option I’d choose. This car looks well kept and dealer serviced, so there shouldn’t be any surprises of any sort except for the face on that Porsche 911 Turbo driver as you out accelerate them. Downsides? Like all M5s, there don’t seem to be many – this is truly a car for most occasions!

2002 BMW M3

509

If there’s one thing that I really love it’s rare colors of already unique cars. I’m not even sure why the rare colors appeal to me so much, but I just love seeing neat German rides in something other than silver, white or black. In the case of the E46 M3, that means my favorite by far is Phoenix Yellow, but that’s not the most rare color on E46 M3s. No, there were some individuals who decided that the color pallet offered by BMW just wasn’t enough; this particular M3 was specified by the owner in the E36 shade of Estoril Blue. Original idea? Well, not really, but boy the results are good. Take a look at this Easter Egg:

509

Year: 2002
Model: M3
Engine: 3.2 liter inline-6
Transmission: 6-speed SMG automatic
Mileage: 77,021 mi
Price: $17,500 Buy It Now

CLICK FOR DETAILS: 2002 BMW M3 on eBay

EXCELLENT CONDITION, GARAGED AND PAMPERED. VERY UNIQUE SPECIAL ORDER STARE BLUE COLOR, 19′ CSL WHEELS. VERY STRONG! SOUNDS AMAZING AND TURNS HEADS EVERYWHERE YOU GO!

CALL JOHN WITH ANY QUESTIONS 305-303-0037

Why you would go through the effort of buying the beautiful BBS CSL 19″ wheels and painting them dirty is beyond me, but like so many other things, it’s not all about me. I’d immediately refinish those gems back to the original silver as I think it would fit the car a little better. This car was mildly modified with exhaust and some blackouts, and looks to have Alcantara seats. Luckily for my bank account, it also has the SMG transmission which rules it out of ownership for me, but if you’re interested in a track ride this could be a good deal. At $17,500 with 77,000 miles it seems pretty appropriately priced and would set you apart from the rest of the E46 M3 crowd!

1984 Volkswagen GTi

509

Hot on the heels of the unverified record-setting $17,750 1983 GTi comes this 1984 model. Missing the turbo but with a sunroof, this year newer model sports the blue interior option under the white exterior. This car has undergone some subtle modifications after a prolonged period in storage and certainly looks fresh. Unlike the first car which was certainly collector status (or at least, price), this example shows some more wear but would make a potentially great driver:

509

Year: 1984
Model: GTi
Engine: 1.8 liter inline-4
Transmission: 5-speed manual
Mileage: 105,900 mi
Price: Reserve Auction

Up for sale my 1984 White and blue rabbit GTI. I bought the Car almost 3years ago after a 15 year stint in heated barn storage . Needless to say much work has been done to get running smoothly and California smog legal again. Replaced recently are :

The missing catyltic convertor
the fuel tank
the oxygen sensor
all the vacuum lines have been replaced and routed properly
the fuel system has been flushed all injectors disassembled and cleaned
The water pump and thermostat replaced cooling system flushed
the cap rotor wires plugs all new
new carpet installed
tires were new 3k miles ago
The right wheel bearing and cv shaft have both been replaced

The car appears stock on the outside other than being lowered slightly. The paint appears to be original small dings on the sides of the vehicle . There is a small dent on the right front fender and a small rust spot in right rear lower roll pan, The interior is very nice the dash id rate 9 out of ten. the seats 8 carpet again is new .The stock snowflake wheels are in very good condition

The aftermarket stuff :
Nuespeed throttle body
front and rear strut tower braces
lowering springs
k/n air filter in the stock air box
double down pipe header and complete techtonics exhaust

This is a nice car not perfect. it runs and drives great and looks good and is California smog legal !. Current mileage is 105,xxx
It is in better condition mechanically and body than the one I had in the ninties

Still needed :
rear hatch sticker needs to be replaced old one was removed because it was faded / cracked
headliner was sagging I cleaned shell off it needs to be recovered
rear wiper is arm is missing
rear seat door panels and shifter console are faded I was going to have them dyed when I got the headliner recovered.

Making it smog legal for California is no small task, so rejoice sun lovers, here’s one for you. The list of needs isn’t too long, but a careful look at the photos shows the seller noting rust in a few areas. As long as it’s not extensive it should be able to be corrected before it spreads too far. With new tires, mechanical service and some subtle modifications, this car looks like a great driver! I highly doubt that it will get anywhere near the pricepoint of the 1983 model, but there are already 19 bids with 4 days left as of writing; it will be interesting to see where this car ends up relative to the 1983, but if I had to guess it would be in the $6,000 – $8,000 range.

Afternoon Accessories: Original Treser Turbo wheels

If you’re into rare Volkswagens, then you’re probably into rare Volkswagen wheels. One of the rarest you can get are the TRX variety wheels made by Ronal for Treser. Known mostly for their outrageous Audi products, the Treser wheels are a neat period-correct detail if you really want to stand out from the crowd. You’re not seeing things in that photo above; they’re directional left and right:

Year: 1980-1999
Model: Treser Turbo
Diameter: TRX 365mm (14.4″)
Width: 8″
Bolt Pattern: 4 x 100
Offset: ET 40

Very rare: set of TRESER Turbo Wheels for every VW with 4 X 100 Wheels i.e. Golf/Rabbit/Jetta Mk1, Golf/Jetta Mk2/3, Scirocco Mk1/2, Passat Mk1/2 etc. They were made by Ronal/Germany.

The size is 155mm X 365mm (similar to 6,5″ X 14,4″). You have to use metric tires Michelin TRX 190/55 HR 365 or 200/55 HR 365.

Two caps are missing, but they are of course useable without them.

Set consists of 2 right wheels and 2 left wheels and 2 centre caps.

Fast shipping with DHL/Deutsche Post following payment.

The bad news is that two of the likely irreplaceable center caps are missing; but you could run them without as the sale notes. Problem two is the tires; TRX tires are still available though pricey through retailers like Coker Tire; a quick check shows two tires are available that would fit, but they’re around $350 per tire. You really have to want these wheels. However, for those not really interested in the limited tire choices, TRX wheels like these make great garage art for the person who has everything, but wants one thing more – or in this case, 4 things more!

Motorsport Monday Part 2: 1985 Audi Coupe GT Race Car

509

If this morning’s Quattro was a little too expensive and sacreligious for your taste, there’s a way that you, too can experience the 5 cylinder Coupe magic on a much more affordable basis. The Audi Coupe GT has long been a staple of SCCA’s ITB class; slightly heavier but better balanced and a tad more powerful than the VW GTis, a well built GT is nearly always a front runner in the class when well driven. Today’s example is no exception, as a top contender in the North East. I have a personal connection to this car; at one point, it was mine! I bought this car in pieces and got it mostly together though not running, but the current owner has taken it to the next level and made it a competitive car. Take a look at this rare Oceanic Blue Metallic 1985:

Unlike the Quattro but like most of our builds, you couldn’t replicate this car for the asking price. Though not the cheapest ITB car for sale, this car is well built and well sorted. The GT is a unique car for sure, and while on paper it shouldn’t work well as a track car, they’re a joy to drive, neutral when well set up and make you really enjoy the driving experience. Think of this as the E30 of Audis, and you’ll start to understand the magic. Looking at this car I wish I had finished the build I started, but building two GTs at the same time proved too costly and time consuming for me. Still, seeing it for sale makes me pull up my most recent bank statement to see if I can go grab it. This car is a steal, will be much cheaper to run than a Quattro rally car, and will give you plenty of thrills. Plus, most people will think it’s a Quattro anyway. Win/win!

Motorsport Monday Part 1: 1983 Audi Quattro

509

While all of the major German marques played in the rough stuff from time to time, Audi was the undisputed king of the mud in the 1980s. By revolutionizing the World Rally Championship to include all-wheel drive and turbocharging, Audi set the bar at a new high. Truth be told, the A1 was a fairly flawed car compared to the monsters it would spawn later, but it’s the legend most think of when talking about the legendarily rally cars of the 1980s. Even the A1’s replacements – the beefed up A2 and later the S1 Sport were quite flawed and by 1985, despite creating one of the most powerful rally cars ever run, Audi was out of the game with the end of Group B. The death of Group B did more to solidify the reputation of these cars than any victories they won; they were “too fast to race”, a myth that still lives on today. In reality by the mid 1990s modern tire technology and updated turbo and computer technology meant that even in regulated form (I’m looking at you, Toyota), the new generation of WRC cars were faster than the fearsome Group B cars ever were – they were just a whole lot easier to control at the limit.

But none of that matters, because what you and everyone else who knows these cars remembers were the roaring 5-cylinders, belching flames and chirping blow-off valves, and images of Walter left-foot braking it to keep on boost, resulting in lurid power slides through the forest with trees and people only inches from the hood. Dramatic scene for sure! The result is that many replica rally cars have been created from street Quattros, such as the one we’re looking at today:

509

Year: 1983

This vehicle has run as the OO pace car in the 2011/2012 Circuit of Ireland rally and the 2011/2012 Ulster rally + others. It is MSA Log booked but currently has no restrictors fitted.

It is very reliable, extremely fast and handles like you wouldn’t believe.

The car will be MOT’d this weekend and taxed.

Build cost was approximately £70K.

Unconventional is a good descriptor for this build, but in many ways, it makes sense. 650 is possible but expensive out of a 20V Turbo, plus unless you score one of the mega-rare aluminum 5 cylinder works blocks, you’re looking at a huge iron lump out in front of the wheels. Moving to the V6 chops a few inches of metal out and pushes the weight distribution back, plus the V6s are a little quicker on spoolup than the single turbo inline-5s. It has a bolt in cage and some trick replica bodywork and graphics, so it’s ready to hit the track. There are additional nice items like the huge baffled fuel tank, wide white wheels, the skid plates and enough lights to land a 747. It sure looks the part.

I do have a few problems with it, though – first, if I was driving this car in anger in the forest, I’d want the cage welded and probably beefed up. I’ve seen some nasty accidents and the bolt in cages act like can tabs, peeling the floor apart. It could really be a matter of life or death. Second, although I understand why they went V6, I wouldn’t want anything other than a 5 cylinder in there even if it was slower. The soundtrack alone is worth the price of entry! Finally, the price; at $81,000, this car is replicable for less than the asking price. It wouldn’t be easy or quick, but unlike most of the builds we’ve shown, you really could build a car like this for less than the ask. Figure you could get a basket case 10v for less than $8K, there’s $8-10,000 in paint and bodywork, another $10,000 in go fast stuff, and then even a well built 20V turbo would run in the $10,000 range installed. By my math, I think the car could be done for under $50,000 pretty much any way you wanted it. Despite this, it’s neat to see a fairly well executed tribute that’s ready to run, and this car is such; I’m just not sure this is the one I’d Sport for.
