1966 Amphicar 770

If I were to attempt to draw a Mercedes Benz 280SE Convertible, my rendering would likely be confused with this car. Looking like a jacked up Mercedes that spent a little too much time in a J.C. Whitney catalog spending spree, the Amphicar was neither a particularly good road car, nor was it a particularly good boat; but it was one of a very select few automobiles that could be both on demand. It’s fairly amazing that even with the budget of the BBC James May couldn’t get a Triumph Herald convertible to float, but in their own way, of course the Germans did! If you’re not in a hurry to get anywhere on either land or sea, today’s 1966 example looks ready to cast off in Lagoon Blue:

This is a 1966 Amphicar 770 and is a two owner car. In 2010 Rocky Mountain Amphicars did some work to ensure it was preserved in excellent working condition.

It has had a complete paint job, new upholstery, all new seals, gaskets, engine mounts, brakes, bilge pump, tires, top, muffler, tailpipe and front and rear bumpers The original radiator, heater core and oil cooler were checked and all found to be leak free! Both radiator hoses and clamps are new and all heater hoses were replaced. The fan shroud is painted black, has new rubber seals all around installed and assembled to radiator with stainless screws and bolts etc. It has a new fuel valve and the ON/OFF/RESERVE selector works as it should. The wheels were sand blasted and repainted with epoxy. It has the original 1147 triumph engine with less than 5,500 miles. The carburetor was overhauled. The rear axles (also called drive shafts), have new spline boots and tight u-joints. All 4 rear wheel bearings, hub keys, axle nuts and seals are new. All front wheel bearings and seals are also new. The propellers are both original, in great condition and favored by many over new replacements. All original controls work as built, bilge, blower, heater controls, wipers, head lights, cigarette lighter, etc..; However, the horn is not currently working. 🙁

The Amphicar was built in Berlin Germany from 1961 to 1968. The total production was 3,878 vehicles and the Amphicar is the only civilian amphibious passenger automobile ever to be mass produced. 3,046 Amphicars were imported into the United States between 1961 and 1967. The Amphicar is rear engined and uses a 4 cylinder British-built Triumph Herald motor producing 43 horse power.

All Amphicars are convertibles, and the civilian models were originally offered in only 4 colors, Beach White, Regatta Red, Lagoon Blue and Fjord Green (Aqua).

The backbone of the Amphicar’s electrics is basically a Lucas 12 volt positive ground system with certain items such as the horn, lighting and switches made by other manufacturers such as Hella and Bosch.

The Amphicar has a top speed of 7mph on water and 70mph on land. Hence, it was dubbed the “Model 770”. It is moved in the water by its twin nylon propellers. A special two-part land-and-water transmission built by Hermes (makers of the Porsche transmission) allows the wheels and propellers to be operated either independently or simultaneously.

The “land transmission” is a 4-speed-plus-reverse unit similar to those found in the old Volkswagen Beetles. The “water transmission” is a 2-speed offering unique to the Amphicar featuring single forward and reverse gears. In the water, the front wheels act as rudders.

This is an awesome running/swimming Amphicar. It will bring a smile to you and everyone you see while driving it. This car is sold where is and as is.

These are cool cars and make a scene wherever they go. You won’t win any drag races or the America’s Cup, but you’ll sure win a popularity contest at your local lake. That said, when buying an Amphicar the prospective buyer needs to not only consider the needs of an older German car, but an older German boat as well. This is very much the case of finding the right one that has received extensive work over its life and hasn’t been abused. This car certainly falls into that category, with the seller obviously quite the proud and adoring owner. I really love that it’s been used, too, rather than just stuck somewhere to gather dust and visit an occasional show. It is because of this, though, that the car is not a top condition car – close, but it’s not a museum piece. While that makes it more attractive for ownership, it also takes it’s value down a notch. Hagerty puts Concours condition Amphicars at about $65,000 and condition 2 around $48,000 – far short of their 2008-2009 highs which exceeded $100,000. This car is probably a good condition 2 car, and as such should bring around $50,000 for the right buyer. The question I want answered, though, is “Does it comes with the hat?”

Well, there you go. Two very complicated, very expensive to maintain cars, both with zero records offered in the ad print. These cars are notoriously tough on the wallet, but like the W8s offer a unique combination of speed and practicality that few others can. I would guess that you’re more likely to find some records with the one-owner Pearlesant car, but the dealer has presented the lower-mile Atlas Grey car much better. Indeed, the 03 shows little wear to its light colored leather; certainly less than the 02 shows. That said, the entry price on the 03 seems well out of line with the market. I reviewed a S6 Avant last month that had slightly more mileage, incorrect wheels but some tasteful modifcations, but that car has still failed to sell despite now being priced $6,000 less. I would say the Atlas Grey car should fetch $10,000 – $12,000, and the Pearlesant White car should stay between $8,000 and $10,000. But as many comments have noted, the entry price may just be the tip of the iceberg, so if you’re serious about getting into one of these cars, get a thorough pre purchase inspection.

1987 Porsche 959

If the Ferrari F40 was the pin up hero for most teenage boys, the Porsche 959 was its arch-enemy, and was the car I was always interested in. The F40 was a pared down street racer, while the 959 sported experimental exotic technologies that even 30 years later most cars don’t have – 6 speed manual? Yep. Active suspension? Yep, that too. Hollow spoke wheels with tire pressure monitoring system? Sure, we can do that. Kevlar composite body? Why not? Active torque splitting all-wheel drive system? Let’s give it a go. Wow. So, the figures are massively impressive. If you’re a fan of German cars or Porsches at all, this car makes your heart flutter. Looking at it today, it still looks pretty like a pretty fresh design. Many of design features have filtered out into other production Porsche models over the past 30 years, and to be honest you could get (and be able to drive) the performance of this car in more recent 911 turbos for a fraction of the price that this car is being offered for; but, frankly the same thing could be said for the F40. These cars captured much more than performance though, they captured the imagination of car enthusiasts throughout the world!

Value? Well, you’re not going to buy this car. Is it worth a million dollars? Even the U.S., that pricing is probably high. Although F40 has been trading in that region or above, it’s better known and arguably more desirable to most of the enthusiast population. In April, a comfort model 959 sold for $770,000, and earlier in the year one of the 959 prototypes failed to meet reserve at Barrett Jackson in the mid $400,000 region. The reality is this isn’t even the only 959 for sale in the U.S. – a quick search will show you even have a choice of colors! This car was serviced and updated by Canepa – probably the best regarded company at working on 959s in the world. One thing makes me slightly sad; seeing this car in pictures with a trickle charger evokes feelings that it’s somehow on life support and won’t ever see the high side of that speedometer again, which given the asking price is probably a reality. But all of these years later, this car still captivates my imagination; and I’m sure I’m not alone in that…

1971 Opel GT

The Opel GT has always been a car that intrigued me. There are times that I look at it and think “Yeah, that car is awesome!” and then I see another and think “Man, that car is just not right!”. I’m not sure why I have such a polar reaction to this model, but I seem to every time. There are some that to me just look fantastic, and others that look like kit cars gone wrong. Perhaps that is in part due to the number of these that I’ve seen in good condition – I’m sure I can count it on one hand. Many, many more I’ve seen rotting in driveways (not unlike some of the Corvettes they were modeled after…), half covered in tarps and awaiting – nee, begging for some attention. Today’s example has obviously gotten a lot of that attention, and is one of the few that makes me smile:

The absolute best way to restore a car is to buy a car that someone else has restored. There is no cheaper way to do it, with one caveat – you hope they did it right. Today’s Opel GT sure looks great, but the lack of details on the restoration, the knock-off alloys, questionable dash padding and stripes make me wonder a bit how thorough this restoration was. These are pretty simple cars that surprisingly you can still get parts for, so I’m not sure that would turn me off all that much. While the performance of this car won’t shock anyone with only around 80 horsepower, they’re light enough to have fun with, and this one looks to have upgrades to the ignition and cooling. As good as this looks, it’s sure to draw a crowd at the next show it attends. Pricing on the best Opel GTs is in the mid teens according to Hagerty, with condition 2 cars around the asking price of today’s example. If you’re looking for a unique occasional car that can be shown and enjoyed on a budget, this might just be the perfect car!

1985 Porsche 930

If you wanted a Porsche 911 Turbo in 1985 in the U.S., you were out of luck; Porsche, intent on pushing the 928 as the premier car in its lineup and saddled with increasingly tough emissions regulations had pulled the 930 from the U.S. lineup in the early 1980s. That didn’t stop many individuals from seeking them out and importing them directly from Europe. With a reputation for being a widow-maker, early 930s still captivate the motoring masses with supercar slaying performance and brutish good looks. Like most of the 911 range, prices have steadily been on the rise and these are a go-to for collectors. Today’s example looks excellent in Guards Red with some Ruf details:

THE BAD:

Air conditioning system needs to be re-charged. System worked fine up until about 2 years ago. Seldom drive this beauty and haven’t had time to re-charge the system.

We’ve featured a few 930s recently, and they always draw lots of attention. Rightly so, as they’re the German car to have from the 1980s if you wanted the best performance. The last 930 we featured was a converted Ruf BTR with about the same mileage but an asking price over double this car. In that light, this car looks like a solid value, with lower miles, the right color and some tasteful modifications to make it a worthy classic. With the correct DOT/EPA paperwork sorted, registering this car anywhere shouldn’t be a problem. Though not a huge fan of black wheels in general, the Ruf Speedlines are some of my favorites and really accent the look of this car rather than detracting from it. The modifications are not overdone and I think are what most enthusiasts would want. The only drawback is the typical “the A/C just needs a charge” line, which if you live in a warmer climate would likely be a pricey repair but worthwhile if you wanted to drive the car with a black interior. Like most people who read this site, I’m a big fan of the E30 M3; but with clean examples pushing the same amount as this car, I can’t help but think this is a much better value, driver, and collectable.

1972 Audi 100 LS

The third generation Audi 100 (5000 to the U.S.) was so revolutionary as a mid-sized sedan, it’s easy to forget that there were two generations of Audi 100s that preceded it. Long before the legendary Quattro debuted, Audi was actually selling a reasonable amount of 100LSs and Foxes here in the 1970s. Not the sportiest or most luxurious of the mid range sedans, the 100 wasn’t the best competition for BMW and Mercedes-Benz, but in its day it was a respectable car. Unfortunately, its day didn’t last very long; plagued with reliability, rust and electrical issues, many of these 100s left a sour taste in U.S. buyers mouths. Now 40 years later, finding a clean 100 is a tough job, but once in a while one pops up for sale, such as today’s black 1972 100LS::

I purchased this several years ago from the original “old lady” owner / driver in Maryland. It was all black with original paint. It was just professionally repainted with a cream colored roof.

Has the original tan vinyl interior, with a little over 60,000 miles on the odometer. In very good condition, drives well. Minimal rust. Never been in an accident. I still drive occasionally, it gets 27mpg. Front brakes have been totally redone, booster bypassed for now. Excellent tires and new front shocks (Boge). The AC/air conditioner has been converted to a newer, more efficient type of compressor, replacing the old York, which vibrated too much and was quite a drag. The pulleys have all been machined to use current 38 degree V belts which was a real boner problem, because Audi spec’ed the original belt at something like 60 degrees and then stopped selling them! System not charged at the moment.

Radio is installed but not hooked up. This car has a good dash pad. Headliner has hole above right visor, not visible when visor in the parked position. I have many spare used and NOS parts. Car is located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Gold/Silver accepted for payment. This is one of the best riding cars I have ever driven!

I feel like it’s a common thread in my posts, but indeed this isn’t a car for everyone. Finding parts is pretty tough though they are available. Most of our fan base would pass this car off as too soft or not sporty enough compared to similar Benz or BMW models. Few want an older automatic. And, as is the case with this car being from Maryland originally, there is more rust in this car than appears on the surface. All of that said, it makes a very reasonable alternative to some of the normal iron that you see at shows. I have a friend with one of these in better shape, and it always seems to draw a crowd at shows. Sure, most people have bad stories to tell about some past relation that owned one and it broke, but what cars from the 1970s didn’t break time to time? I think this car’s design has continued to age well and still looks sharp, especially in black.

After talking with my 100 expert friend, we both agreed that this car is heavily overpriced. The very best 100LSs are not currently bringing the asking price of this car, and while this car is very nice, it’s not the best example out there. The rust would have to be addressed long term if you wanted to keep this, and doing so will be pricey for sure. Given the condition of the car, we both agreed that $5,000 – $6,000 was the right asking price for this car. The owner is certainly ambitious asking double that amount, but honestly is unlikely to get it. Despite that I hope this car finds a new loving owner who will continue to keep it up; finding clean 100LSs is going to continue to be a very rare event!

Before you start furiously typing “C4 S6 production ended in 1995”, let me clarify something – it didn’t, and this car is from Canada. Satisfied, eh? We’ve covered a string of S6s recently, mostly focusing on the wagon variant that most people desire. However, there are some sedan fans out there, and the S6 made a very capable sedan as well. One of the complaints on the Avant I wrote up last week was the timing belt issue; this car has had that timing belt service covered, along with suspension work. These cars have a great sound when the exhaust is opened up, and replacing the clutch is no small job, so it’s nice to see that done as well. O34 makes some great upgrades for these cars and are known for pumping out some serious power, and with the mileage the injector upgrade is probably a smart modification. The original Avus wheels are some of my favorites mounted on Audis (though not as light or strong as the earlier forged Fuchs wheels fitted to the S4 and some S6s), and with the lowering springs this car has eliminated some of the fender gap and floaty ride that plagued early 1990s Audis. The European lights are a great addition, as is the OEM S6 Plus grille, one of my favorite Audis ever made. The interior seems to be one of the best Ecru I’ve seen in a long time, especially considering the miles covered. This car certainly checks most of the right boxes, even if it isn’t a wagon.

With several thousand dollars of maintenance performance alone, the asking price of this car isn’t out of line with the condition of the car or market. The modifications aren’t extreme and could be easily reversed if the new owner wanted; but I’d keep them all in place. To me this car is an interesting counterpoint to the high mile M3 I wrote up the other day; I feel like I’d have to undo everything the owner upgraded on that car, while on this one I feel like the owner read my mind. I also mentioned in that post that while the miles on that M3 scared me a bit, I’d have much less issue jumping in to a high mile S6. I’m guessing this car will likely be snapped up by someone who needs a winter driver rather than a long term keeper because of the mileage, and as such the purchase price at just below $5,000 seems spot on. Sure, you could find one with a few less miles or a few more mods for a bit more money, but this package sure looks good!

1997 BMW M3 2 door coupe 5-speed with 228,000 highway miles. Car runs and drives like it has 20,000 miles. No issues whatsoever. I went on a several minute rant regarding “Angel Eyes” to my wife just the other night when we were looking for an E46 M3. They bother me when they’re not on the cars they’re supposed to be on. Maybe you like them, but they really tick me off. You know what else ticks me off? Headlight “eyebrows”. Why would you cover up your headlights? I don’t get it. And while I value good music, I’ve never been a fan of cars that have big stereo systems. They never seem to work correctly for anyone other than the original owner, and even then, only occasionally. I’m sure there are plenty of examples that prove me wrong, but I haven’t seen them yet. All of that said, the interior recovering doesn’t bother me and reminds me a similar B5 Audi interiors. While the M Contours and the rear spoiler don’t really suit me, I believe they’re correct for the luxury package and were reasonably popular items. For me, I prefer the earlier wheels and spoiler-free design, but as I’m reminded occasionally, it’s not all about me.

We’ve shown a few M3s over the past couple of months, including this Red 1995 that failed to sell at it’s original asking price. With two and a half times as many miles but at 1/3 the original asking price, is this E36 reasonably priced? If this were a 1995 Audi S6, I don’t think I’d be very worried, but this many miles on an E36 M3 gives me pause, especially when I see some modifications – perhaps it’s unfair of me to judge in this manor and stereotype, but I associate these types of mods with cars being driven hard, even if they’re very much loved by their owners. That said, how much less expensive can an E36 M3 really be?

Tuner Tuesday – 1997 Ruf CTR2 Sport

Most Rufs need little introduction. They can be summed up in one word: fast. As such, let me tell you about my encounter with this particular Ruf. The year was 2001 and I was at Road America for a PCA race with Mustante Motorsports. On the first day that we were there, it was a combined test day and Viper race. This car was racing a pack of 25-30 Vipers, all well set up. The green flag flew, and so did the Ruf – so much so, that it had a solid 5-6 second lead at the end of the first lap. That kind of lead is something Vettel would give his left arm for. I remember thinking it was such an unfair race, but at the same time sooooo cool. What was particularly memorable about it, though, was that you could see the car, but unlike the bellowing Vipers, the Ruf made almost no noise. It was both fascinating and surreal – the only other object I’ve ever seen moving that fast and not making sound was a supersonic jet fighter – a fitting comparison, I think. Fast forward a few years and now you can own the “ludicrous speed” of what is probably the best known Ruf in the United States – the prototype CTR2 Sport built for the Beddors:

If you look up “No expense spared” in the dictionary, a picture of this car might appear next to it. You may not know the Beddors, but they started bringing Rufs over early as well as starting the “Quattro Club” – what would become the Audi Club of North America. At one point, the late Frank Beddor had 3 or 4 Sport Quattros (yes, the real deal), and ended up donating a few of them to the club. To this day, the ACNA national driving events are named for him. This car took the already impressive CTR2 and kicked it up a few notches, with composite panels, Magnesium BBS race wheels, more power, a FIA approved cage and that crazy rear wing. It is most certainly an impressive build and might be the fastest CTR2 ever made. At 700 horsepower, there isn’t much that you’ll encounter that will be faster.

We’ve featured a few 993 based Rufs recently – first the white Ruf engined replica Turbo R then the silver replica Turbo R. While the white car was asking over $100,000, the lesser silver replica is still listed below $70,000. Both of these cars would wither away in the presence of this CTR2 Sport, though. Three years ago, we even featured a similar $190,000 yellow CTR2 Sport, but even that hides in the shadow of this car’s glory. I’d like to say that a quarter million dollars for a soon to be 17 year old Porsche is outrageous, but I think in this case, it may be spot on. I’d certainly rather own this car with it’s impressive history than a Carrera GT for $100,000 plus more. Which would you rather have?

Motorsport Monday – Derek Bell Signature Edition Porsche 962 #0

I have to admit, I was a little disappointed last week that more of you weren’t interested in the SRP2 Picchio I wrote up. What a deal that car was as a track weapon! But I get it, not everyone likes an unknown race car. Well then, how about a very well known race car that’s been turned into a road car? If this doesn’t get your interest, you need to talk to your doctor and check your pulse. That’s because today we’re looking at a road legal Porsche 962.

The exploits of the 962 are pretty well known, but to those who don’t, this is one of the most winning endurance prototypes ever developed. Capable of 6 minute Nurburgring times and 250 mph at Le Mans, the 962 was a dream car in the 1980s and remains so today. Getting to see one of these cars in the flesh still gives me goosebumps – it’s as if a Titan has come to Earth to grace you with its presence. Not content with leaving these cars only to race, there were several different road-legal versions produced – Dauer, DP Motorsports and Schuppan all made versions. In the heady supercar times of the late 80s, someone decided to give it another go and slap 5 time Le Mans winner Derek Bell’s name on it. While the production run never came to be, the prototype is available today, ready for you to pop some number plates on it:

In stock now is this amazing road registered Porsche 962. Built at a cost of around $2 Million USD this astonishingly quick road car is based around an aluminium Fabcar monocoque with integral rollcage believed to have been built for the Dyson Racing IMSA team in the USA who prepared and raced Porsche powered race cars. On top of this chassis is a full carbon fibre long tailed body.

Engine wise the standard 962 2.8 litre unit would be no good for road use so instead the car is fitted with a twin turbo 993 GT2 engine running 580 BHP and giving a colossal 741Nm of torque. When the car weighs just 830kg that equates to around 700 BHP per tonne. To put this figure into perspective the iconic McLaren F1 is 550 BHP/tonne, a Carrera GT is 442, a Pagani Zonda C12S is 437 etc. For long distance endurance the car features a 120 litre fuel tank.

This power would be pointless if the car didn’t handle and stop well enough, to that end the car is fitted with top quality Koni adjustable suspension with hydraulic adjustable ride height (it will go up quite steep drives and speed bumps without issue). Stopping is taken care of by monster 350mm floating Brembo brakes with adjustable bias.

Interior wise the car has two leather bucket seats with Willans harnesses, it features aircon to keep the cockpit cool, parking sensors, an intercom system for driver and passenger comfort and electric mirrors. A removable steering wheel makes entry and egress from the vehicle much easier.

For track use the car features air jacks, a fire extinguisher and towing straps front and rear.

This has to be the ultimate fast road or track car which is as thrilling to drive as it is superb to look at.

The racing legend Derek Bell put his name to the car which was planned to be manufactured in greater numbers, the inside of the door shut bears a copy of his signature and the build number 00.

The history of most 962s is pretty difficult to follow. Many were raced, crashed, rebuilt, modified, or re-tubbed. On top of that, not all 962s were built by Porsche – Kremer, Fabcar, and Andial among others all built versions of the 962. Fabcar was one of the few that received factory chassis numbers, and this particular example is a Fabcar built tub that was originally intended for Dyson Racing. You may remember me mentioning Fabcar as the firm contracted to build the 944 GTR I wrote up in July. Fitted with a longtail body and a more-reasonable to run on the road GT2 twin turbo motor, this 962 certainly looks the part, though I have to admit it looks a bit naked without all of the normal graphics. Without those graphics one is also reminded how slab-sided these cars were, and just how big that long tail was.

Of course, this car isn’t for everyone. It will be difficult to get it imported and registered in the US. It will be very expensive to run. You’ll need a pit crew to change tires. It has zero ground clearance. But, it does have a parking brake! So, if this is impractical as a road car, why are we writing it up? Well, if you haven’t been following the market (and you would be excused…), getting into a 962 will set you back – a lot. Buy a not particularly sucessful or well maintained 962, and you’ll be out 1 to 1.5 million. Want a winning car? Better have more than 2 million available. So, at $500,000, this car is a bit of a deal! $500,000 is about $100,000 more than some of the best Carrera GTs are fetching these days, but pull up next to one in this and I can guarantee what the crowd will be swooning over. And if you wanted to race it, PCA would recognize this as a legitimate Porsche and I would wager that with some convincing, you could even run it in some historic events, though that would likely require a motor change. Unfortunately for all of us, you’re not likely to ever see this car, and even more unfortunate is that this car will doubtfully ever be run on roads again. But haven’t you always wished you could drive one of those fantastic prototypes from the 1980s down to your local car meet to impress all of your buddies? I sure did, and because of that, I’m thankful that this car exists at all. A man can dream!
