1987 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe

Many times in our search for interesting and rare cars to feature we pass over the regular cars; cars that are in good shape and would make for great options for many prospective buyers, but that don’t immediately jump off the page. Or, at least, I find myself doing that. The negative side of this, of course, is that these are the cars that typically come with the most reasonable prices, a point that is particularly true with the 911 where any sense of exclusivity quickly raises the bar on value. I think this 911 fits within that ‘regular car’ category and while we can never be totally assured of such the hope is that it will also come at a decent price. Here we have a Guards Red 1987 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe, located in Oregon, with 98,750 miles on it.

2012 Porsche Cayman R

From seemingly the moment it released the Cayman Porsche was criticized for holding it back so as not to outclass the 911. As we often heard, the Cayman’s inherently better balanced mid-engine layout should easily be able to outperform Porsche’s icon, if only Porsche would truly unleash it and give it a proper engine. Regardless of this criticism, the Cayman has been widely praised; it followed in the long footsteps of Porsche’s racing history providing excellent performance and refinement in the same package. With the release of the Cayman R criticism was abated. With the new Cayman GT4 we have a glimpse of what the Cayman truly can be. Here we have an example of the former, a Speed Yellow 2012 Porsche Cayman R, located in Texas, with 12,726 miles on it. The Cayman R didn’t really add much in the horsepower department – gaining only 10 hp over the standard Cayman S – but when combined with its lighter weight – some 120 fewer pounds than the Cayman S – the results began to take shape. Marry extra power and lighter weight with more performance-oriented suspension tuning and the Cayman R stood apart from its mid-engined siblings and finally bit at the heels of the 911. Was the R akin to the 911 GT3 RS in its track focus? Not quite, but it pointed in that direction and gave many critics what they had clamored for.

Amethyst Pearl 1992 Porsche 911 Carrera 2 Coupe

I don’t know that this 1992 Porsche 911 Carrera 2 Coupe is a 1 of 1, as the seller hints, but given the rare color combination and a rare option or two we’re certainly looking at a 911 whose owner isn’t likely to see another one coming the other way. The colors return us to my current fascination with purple 911s and this one, Amethyst Pearl, is one of the better options along that spectrum. It’s not as dark as Aubergine, but also not as bright, i.e. flashy, as Amaranth Violet so it walks that fine line that I think a color like purple really needs to walk. It’s beautiful and interesting. The white leather interior is sort of like a punch in the face. While I don’t normally associate white with brightness when considering the color palette, it definitely comes across that way here. I don’t know that it works, at least not for me, but the contrast is interesting and is certain to provide an avenue for discussion. We definitely can’t call it monotone!

1979 Porsche 911SC Targa

Following upon the heels of yesterday’s Porsche 930 here we have a very similar looking 1979 Porsche 911SC Targa, located in Virginia. Both cars came from the 1979 MY and both have the same rare exterior color. But the devil is in the details as this SC departs from that 930 in a few interesting ways – you know, other than them being completely different models. The most obvious point of departure comes in the interior where we find pasha inserts on the seats. Like the many tartan inserts we’ve seen on other Porsches from this period the pasha inserts can be tough to love and pretty clearly date this 911 to the ’70s. For some buyers though they are just the thing to spice up the interior. We also find the cookie cutter wheels, here shown in black, a color which I’ve very rarely seen and which gives them a very subtle appearance. It also has one of the earlier whale tails for the SC and it looks much more like that of the early 930s than what we would late find on other 911s. Some documentation of its originality to this 911 will be key here.

1979 Porsche 930

A funny little aside to open this post: when this 930 first came up on eBay the mileage was listed at 590,031. I thought, “holy hell that’s a lot of miles!” It would easily be the highest mileage 930 I’ve ever come across and it looked in pretty nice shape for that many miles. I wanted to know all about it. It’s history likely would be fascinating. Still, I suspected it was a typo. Especially since the seller made no mention of the mileage in the ad (you’d think something like that would come up). We all know that Porsche does some fantastic engineering work so perhaps it could be accurate, even on a 930. Well, it was a typo. The mileage is now shown at a more understandable 59,031. Darn. That removed what seemed the most interesting characteristic of this 930, but it’s still shown in a very nice, and rare, color so it remains worth our time. Here we have a Light Blue Metallic 1979 Porsche 930, located in Los Angeles, with a complementary dark blue leather interior and the stated 59,031 miles on it.
