For those of you who follow the investment world you probably heard of ponzi scam artist Scott Rothstein. With him looking at up to 100 years in jail and the feds taking all his assets, his large modern exotic car collection is up for auction.
The auction catalog doesn’t have too much from Germany. It does have a Bugatti Veyron.
The one German item that caught my eye was this canary yellow SLR convertible. The auction happens June 3rd in Florida.
The high profile nature of this case probably means lots of people will be watching the auction so you may not find any deals here. Also I suspect in a situation like this the yokels who towed the cars and are setting up the auction probably beat the ever loving crap out of the cars doing donuts in the parking lot.
While there have been a few mint condition 190E 2.3-16s appear on this site, the garden variety 2.6 is more of a rarity these days. Especially with mileage this low. Originally introduced in 1986, the 2.6 liter inline six gave the W201 chassis the legs it needed to compete in the upper end of the compact luxury segment. The car we see here on eBay is the last of the breed, as 1994 saw the introduction of the W202 C class and a whole new naming scheme for the Mercedes-Benz lineup.
The seller states:
One owner bought new with 27 tested miles, all Mercedes Benz service records are from the dealership since new. These include oil changes, all filters, flushes, brakes, rotors, and the transmission was serviced as recommended at the dealership 21 pages documenting the service.
This 190E 2.6 has only been maintained at a Mercedes Benz new car dealership with is rare for a ’93. The title was never stamped with a lien it was bought new with cash. Sticker priced according to the original window sticker was $36,175 and the mileage was noted at 20mpg city 25mpg highway. It has the optional wiper listed at $305 and the anti theft system listed at $570.
The vehicle prep center was Chicago with its port of origin being Baltimore shipping # 2200. This exceptionally clean Mercedes Benz has been garage kept and driven in only PA summer weather. The owner stayed in Florida during the winters and had other autos in Florida to drive leaving this in the heated garage in pa all winter. This explains the low miles of only about 4,000 miles a summer.
The rims have never been painted or touched a curb a rarity especially for a woman driver. And the back seat I don’t even think has ever been used, no pets were in this Benz nor were it ever smoked in. head liner and all are just perfect. I have spent time in California, I’ve purchased and driven cars in California and this car is just as nice underneath as any car from California. Naturally everything looks like new.
There are only a few chips and small scratches and a wear spot worn through the material on the interior pillar between front and rear doors. I was driving this car for a couple of weeks and is it ever a pleasure to drive. It has lots of highway power and it will cruise with anything and handle better than most new cars built today. The black paint is black not any kind of metallic and the lower is a nickel as shown in the pictures.
Towards the end of college, my father had a 1992 Diamant Blau (Diamond Blue) 2.6. My mother had located the car for sale in the classified ads in the Washington Post with 102,000 miles on it. The car was extremely well taken care of and it made it all the more painful when it was totaled (not his fault) in an accident. I just sent my father this auction, as my parents live in PA. This might just be the ticket to replace his beloved 2.6. I miss that car dearly, as well. If you have never driven a 2.6, I highly recommend it. In my opinion, the combination of handling, comfort, size and seamless inline six power was perfected by Mercedes-Benz in this model.
Very nice looking Euro 280SL twin cam. Despite being a Euro car it is registered in California so you can be sure it has been setup to pass emissions requirements. The Euro car has the nice bumpers and headlamps. It also features the somewhat hard to find 4 speed manual for added entertainment. The interior looks wonderful despite 128,000 miles. It include the hard top as well as the canvas top. A great boulevard cruiser for summer nights. $12,500 buy-it-now price.
Ever since I was a little kid, I always had a fascination with the R107 SL roadster. Maybe it was Beverly Hills Cop, maybe it was the neighbor across the street that bought a black on gray example brand new in 1987. These aren’t the sportiest or most practical of machines, but for 19 years, they defined open air motoring from the house of the Three Pointed Star. Here is a relatively clean example of a later model with 123,000 miles for under $10,000.
Up for sale is a 1987 Mercedes Benz 560SL. It has a low 123,XXX miles, which is less than 5,500 miles per year. Car has lived in Colorado its entire life! 1st owner owned the car from 1987-2007!
Exterior color is Astral silver metallic, and the interior leather color is Alpaca gray. This is a very beautiful color combination that is not often seen. This car is in superb condition for its age. It needs absolutely nothing to be daily driven, but will equally enjoy staying in the garage until it’s time for a top-off weekend mountain cruise.
The engine (5.6L V8) and transmission are literally the best part of this car. No leaks anywhere, not one drip. The engine starts with a flick of the key and idles quietly and smooth. And the two most important things with an older Mercedes; 1) Oil pressure is above average at all times 2) Engine runs within temperature in all driving conditions (even with AC on). The engine is exceptionally clean and has obviously been well maintained. There are no vacuum leaks, as the vacuum gauge is pegged full left with the engine idling. If you see the vacuum gauge anywhere else at idle, it means that vacuum leaks are abound! Everything is vacuum related with these engine/transmissions so it is imperative that there are no leaks. The 4-speed automatic transmission shifts smooth and is without fault. The A/C is still R12 and blows nice and cold. The engine oil was just changed and is good for another 3,000 miles. All other fluids are recently checked/changed and are all clean.
The Astral silver paint is original to the car and is in very good shape. There are a few spots on the passenger side hood line where the clear coat has lifted. Not paint fade, clear coat lift. This is a given for almost any 20+ year old Mercedes. Thankfully it’s a silver car, not a dark color…so it’s really not noticeable. Otherwise the paint is in exceptional shape. There are maybe 2 door dings total. There is absolutely no body damage and the body/undercarriage is completely rust free. Bumpers and chrome are all straight with no cracks or dents in the chrome. All of the plastic/glass light & signal lenses are without flaw and in good shape. The hardtop is excellent shape. The original soft top is also in good shape, no leaks, the plastic windows are clear and not cracked/broken.
The interior is in good condition. The instrument cluster gauges are not completely faded. The carpets are very clean. The original Becker radio is still present and works great. The rest of the interior shows minor signs of wear. The driver’s seat has some small leather checking/cracking on the seat bottom, just a small tinge of bolster wear. The armrest is perfect. The passenger seat really has no flaws and is in great shape. The door panels on both doors are perfect with no flaws. The dashboard has a few cracks present. You can get a custom fit dash carpet for around $50, and a new dash pad/cover is $100; and if installed properly will look just as good as a factory replacement dashboard. Otherwise, the interior is in excellent condition. The windshield is the original Sekurit piece, and has no rock chips or cracks. Both power front windows roll up and down very quietly.
The suspension on this car is very tight. I have driven W107’s with half the miles that felt considerably looser than this one. Steering has absolutely no play. If you stomp on the brakes, it stops straight. It has new Bilstein shocks, new front brakes, and newer Bridgestone Potenza tires (60% remaining). I’m sure other front suspension work has been done at some point. It really drives like the sports car that it was meant to be. Many SL’s on the road with mileage/age handle like a wallowing pig. The tightness of the suspension/steering on this particular car inspires driving confidence!
Not much else to say about this original 560SL. It’s not a perfect car. It’s definitely nicer than your typical daily driver, but not quite as nice as the 60,000 mile garage queen. But overall I feel that it looks/feels/drives more like the 60,000mi example. A lot of the SL’s you see for sale have been sitting in the garage or storage for years at a time which is worse for the car than being driven seldom, even just bi-weekly. I would jump in this car and drive it cross-country without hesitation, which I cannot say for some of the non-driven SL’s for sale on eBay.
As far as R107 SLs go, this car is pretty good value for money. True, there are a ton of lower mileage examples out there, but then you’d be paying a lot more and hesitate to use the vehicle on a regular basis. There are also many worn out examples out there for this same price. These are very robust machines, especially with the dual row timing chains in the 5.6 liter, 225 horsepower engine. This along with the fact that the seller provides an extensive history gives any prospective buyer peace of mind.
The W110 fintail Mercedes Benz models fit our budget theme week just fine. These cars have great lines and will give you plenty of looks on the road or at a car show. The 2 liter engines, whether gas or diesel, are bullet proof and can easily be put into daily driver service. They can get you 30+ MPG too. The Heckflosse models have quite a fan base so finding advise on repairs and getting help with parts will not be too difficult for someone new to the breed. Here are three examples that could use a little love. If you budget $5000 for each of these you should be able to get the car and have plenty left over to get a start on priority fixes on each.
The good on this one is that the current owner says he drives every day 26 miles so mechanically it is all ready to go. The bad is that the owner says it could use some paint and floor pans. Paint is no problem, but floor pans could be a bit scary as it means there is other rust elsewhere. Interior looks ok and the manual makes it a bit more exciting to drive. The current owner mentioned that he considered painting the car pink for his daughter, if you buy this car, please don’t do that. Buy-It-Now is $3500.
Here is a gas version with the manual. The interior looks to be in nice shape, the white rim steering wheel is classy. The exterior could use some paint. The seller states that there is some rust, not surprising considering the car is located in Minneapolis. Ask price is $2900 and I’d be surprised to see any bids at that, I bet it can be had for less.
This one also needs some love. The owner says it has a fairly new paint job, but clearly they did very little prep work when doing the paint because you can see rust bubbles and rust streaks popping up in several places. The car some dents that could use attention. The red interior looks nice, but the dash and wood could use help. I’d yank out that ugly modern radio and replace it with a classic Becker or at least something that is visually more pleasing. All the original manuals are included. Reserve is not met at $1550.
Continuing with our under $10,000 theme, here we have an exceptional 1994 Mercedes-Benz E320 Sportline sedan. W124 sedans with low mileage are getting more and more scarce these days, with Sportline editions being pretty non-existant, no matter the condition. Available on E class coupes and sedans from 1993 to 1995, this package included 7″ wide wheels, 60 series rubber and stiffer springs, struts, roll bars and bushings which translated into a slightly lower ride height. Also included was a shifter with the Sportline badge, sport seats for the sedan, as well as small badges on the front fenders.
ONE OWNER 1994 Mercedes E320 Sportline Edition. 1994 Mercedes E320 Very Rare Sportline Edition that only has 54k original miles on it. The Mercedes comes Car Fax and Autocheck Certified and all service is up to date and the car is not even broken in yet. Do you want a car that will not go down in value? This is the one. It is stunning and your neighbors will surely be jealous when they see you go by with the sunroof open..You owe it to yourself to drive this beauty. I bought this car and updated all that it needed and now it’s time to sell. Other than a couple noted flaws it is pristine.
The one thing I don’t like about this car is, you guessed it, the color. Other than that, the fact that this is a one owner, clean, low mileage example of a very rare (and revered) Benz, the buy-it-now price of $8,990 seems like a steal.
With each successive generation of C class, the original W201 chassis “baby Benz” has developed a cult following. Many of these cars were bought by folks who never had owned a Mercedes-Benz before and used and abused them much like any other car. Then there were those who appreciated the 190E for its virtues and subsequently, there are still a few clean, low mileage examples out there to prove it. Like this one:
The seller states:
You are viewing one of the finest examples of a 1989 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.6 with only 48,920 2 owner Actual miles or 78,730 Kilometers. This Baby Benz hails from Canada and was imported into the States in December 2007 having 40,000 Actual miles on it. The original speedometer is in Kilometers but I can have it converted to MPH at no additional cost to you. This Mercedes runs, drives and looks like new. The 2.6 liter engine runs super smooth and powerful and the automatic transmission shifts flawlessly. There are no leaks of any kind. It was recently serviced and new front Bilstein struts, new hood foam and 4 brand new Continental tires were just installed.
Everything works as new including Ice cold A/C, all power windows, locks, sunroof, mirrors, antenna, outside temperature gauge and even has heated seats! This 190E has never been involved in any accidents or had any paintwork. A perfect Carfax report is available upon request. The Original factory paint shines like new with only a couple minor stone chips and one scratch that runs along the rear passenger door. The interior is spotless and looks Brand New. There are no cracks in the dash or woodgrain and the seats, carpets, door panels and headliner are all perfect.
When I was in college, my father had a 1992 190E 2.6 in diamond blue and I loved that car. The smaller inline six engine teamed with the smooth 4-speed automatic makes this a joy to drive and gives it plenty of power for all situations. The car was also economical and reliable to boot. Unfortunately, that car was broadsided at 40mph by someone in a Ford Taurus who ran a stop sign and should have subsequently had his license taken away for totalling what was a fantastic car. My father has been on the hunt for just the right 190E ever since, as he claimed this was the best car he ever owned. The buy-it-now price of $7,995 seems right in line with other clean, 190E 2.6 examples I’ve seen out there lately.
As an aside, even Mercedes-Benz themselves recognizes just how important the 190E was and converted a 1992 190E 2.6 Sportline to a 190D with a new, 2.2 liter BlueEFFICIENCY four cylinder diesel engine, pumping out 201 horsepower. With its new lease on life, this 190 can reach 60 mph in 6.2 seconds and return 48 mpg. Hybrid what?
I know I’ve posted a lot of Mercedes lately, but that is my passion. Some I post I smile and say, “that is nice”, but some I find and I go “Hell Yes!!” This is one of the later.
Mid eighties Benz cars with genuine AMG modified engines are not very common. You’ll see a number of cars with body modifications, but usually that Miami Vice style look stops with the exterior. This one has the full treatment including one of AMG’s interior, suspension, and engine packages.
This is a low 15,000 mile grey market Euro vehicle. With such low miles it is not surprising that the car looks immaculate. The interior has a dual color treatment similar to some of the modern Designo models and includes a rare 300 km/h AMG speedo. Check out the selection of options on the power seats. Those are Recaro CSE seats that if sold by themselves can go for almost $2000 a piece.
The rear end has been flared out to fit thick meats on the rear wheels.
What really sets this apart though, as I mentioned above, is the engine. The engine bay houses a rare AMG 5.4 liter engine, note the AMG valve covers. This is a very scarce motor. It was third down in terms of power packages that AMG offered in the mid eighties. Number one was the 6.0 liter Hammer motor, which came a bit later, number two was a 5.0 liter 4 valve per cylinder engine that bumped out a conservative rated 340 horsepower and 457 Nm of torque. The 5.4 in this car is a pushed out version of the stock 5.0 liter M117 engine, it puts out 310 hp and a solid 475 Nm of torque.
The seller states that this is one of 25 cars with the 5.4 liter and the widebody conversion. Hard to say what the real number is, but that does not sound unreasonable.
With several days left to go the price has already reached over $25,000 with multiple bids, and the reserve not met. You can tell by that sort of price that this is not your typical 500SEC that you find in your local swap sheet. The rarity is clearly appreciated by aficionados. I would love to have this in my garage.
UPDATE: this eBay auction mysteriously disappeared, possibly a fraudulent seller. The auction did look legit, but if you see this car appear online again be careful. Like I mentioned above there are very few Benzs out there carrying this engine.
UPDATE 2: as you can see in the comments section below the seller contacted us to say he is legit and the auction was pulled due to the Euro VIN # problem we’ve seen other sellers run into when selling grey market cars on eBay.
The passing of the R107 chassis Mercedes-Benz 560SL proved a turning point for the classic SL roadster. Gone was the heavy, boulavardier cruiser and in came a more technologically advanced, if heavier, model. Not only was the SL available with the new 5.0 liter, four cam V8, but Mercedes saw fit to equip the new model with the first ever inline six engine for the US market since the 1972 280SL, resurrecting the storied 300SL badge once again. Here we have a 300SL with the rare 5 speed manual option over at Quattroworld.com.
75,523 miles. The turbo kit was used on this car and removed recently for smog.
Here is a video of a similarly equipped 300E with a Mosselman turbo installed:
R129 SLs have just about reached bottom when it comes to resale value, especially the earlier models. Going forward, clean ones are sure to appreciate, as we have seen with previous generations SLs as they age. While it would take the right kind of person to buy a 5 speed SL, there are very few out there and of those, I’m sure they have their following.
This is the last of my last minute Easter posts. Here is a tastefully modified 500E with 153,000 mile. It is up for sale at $9100 no reserve. Even with the mileage that is a very tempting price for a 500E.
The car comes with a blacked out grill and a brand new $9000 paint job. The nice deep dish three piece AMG wheels the seller is keeping, which is unfortunate because they look really good and are contemporary with the car.
There is something funky going on with the headlamp wipers, but that should be an easy fix.
The seller gives a list of recently serviced items including:
VALVE COVER GASKETS
REAR SHADE SERVICE
ALPINE AM, FM, SIRIUS, BLUETOOTH PHONE INTERFACE, USB AND IPOD FEATURE
This looks like a solid car for under $10k. Even though the auction ends really soon a PPI would be advised with those miles.
