1974 Mercedes 280S Custom Crazy Hearse

This car is from down under in more ways then one. It hails from Australia, but there also is quite a lot of under world connections with this beast.

From the description it looks like this started life off as a proper hearse, but a new owner has gone all out with custom work to turn it into a head turner. Fancy mural work all over, neon lighting, big subwoofer, full size casket with skeleton, this thing has some fun possibilities.

With the under hood work being a fairly standard Mercedes 2.8 liter 6 cylinder maintenance to keep it running shouldn’t be too “scary,” despite having covered 128,000 miles.

The ask price is just under $13,000 U.S.

1991 Mercedes 300SL *sigh*

We try to avoid posting utter monstrosities and crimes against nature but sometimes one sneaks in. Perhaps it is my soft spot for Mercedes that slipped this one through.

The seller boldly proclaims “THIS VEHICLE HAS BEEN UPGRADED” and they also claim, “WE HANDPICK ONLY THE FINEST VEHICLES” so I guess its all relative.

I’m not really sure what one would do with a car like this. It isn’t valuable enough to try and return to it’s former glory and the custom work has really limited the potential buyer pool.

The oddly placed aftermarket driving lights and the rainbow fleck paint aren’t what you normally would associate with a Benz, don’t forget the hood scoop(?!) either. The racing stripes shout class in case the gaudy steering wheel cover or Fast and Furious wing didn’t catch your eye.

I see this car parked in a high school parking lot in the near future.

With 123,000 miles the car has a no reserve ask price of $3,600.  Not a bad price, you could part the car out and make that much, but still I’m not sure this is going to see any bidders. The AMG rims are worth at least a quarter of that if they are genuine as the seller states.

Do any of you have a better suggestion as to where car like this will end up next?
Please don’t do this to your Mercedes.

1971 Mercedes 250 with 26,000 miles

I’m going to top Aaron’s earlier post of the 1983 GTI with 38k with this sweet low mile cupcake.

You sometimes think of Mercedes and you picture long term reliability and high mileage cars. So how about this gem of a vintage Mercedes sedan that has covered a mere 26,000 miles. Finding a garden variety 250 with such low miles is almost unheard of. These cars were typically used, racking up many trouble free miles. This beauty was spotted prowling the paddock over at Watkins Glen, New York. I’d like to know the story about previous ownership to see where the low mileage comes from. I noted that the car has historic plates on it so it is not likely the current owner’s daily driver. The owner also states it has not seen winters, a plus in central New York.

The cream paint looks fantastic, the interior almost as new. Not even a single of the notorious Mercedes Benz dash cracks. No pitted chrome either. This Benz comes with the column shifted automatic, not quite as desirable or as fun as the floor mounted auto or the manual, but this is a sedate sedan.

Nothing too flashy here, just a chance to have a charmer of a Benz transport you back into a simpler time of premium automotive travel. Perfect for say a New Haven area professor, tweed jacket with suede elbow patches not included.

The owner asks for $10,000, and says call if interested, 607-279-7688.

1984 Mercedes 300TD Wagon Looking fresh in blue

Not too much info to give on this one, but it looks super clean. The 300TD isn’t the type of car a general German car enthusiast will pick out of a crowd for ownership, but they do have quite a cult following in the Benz world. Known for their supreme reliability and ruggedness the 5 cylinder Garrett turbocharged diesel provides enough push to get from here to there. So though I don’t know the mileage in this case does it really matter as long as it has been maintained? It looks like the current owner has taken care of this car for instance those look like Cibié lights out front. The car comes with the 3rd row seat, an extra set of alloys with winter tires, and some extra parts. This car also has the load leveling suspension in the rear to keep the front end down with a heavy cargo. This system can be a pain to work with, but shouldn’t be a deal breaker. Parts in general for the W123 and 3.0 liter engine are plentiful.
The seller gives contact info as 607-two-five-seven-5588, the car was seen in Watkins Glen, New York, but that is an Ithaca number. The ask is $8600. There is probably some wiggle room to be had but, it is not an outrageous price by any means for a well maintained rust free version. I didn’t get a chance to really look underneath or inside, but it did look nicely preserved. That baby blue would look great off in a winter wonderland with some skis on the roof. I actually believe that the W123 300TD has held its value better than its successor the W124. Some fan should give this car a good home in the next chapter of its life.

1997 Brabus E65 W210 For Sale in California

John emailed me a few days ago to inform us that his wonderful and amazing Brabus E65 was on eBay. I fell sick on Wednesday and am just now catching up. But don’t let that delay you — as of right now, there is only 2 days left on his auction.

His ad tells the story well, so without further ado:

This is a full W210 Brabus car; one of one in USA. Built in 1997 from a brand new, zero-mile E420 purchased from Beverly Hills MB. Car was completely disassembled and shipped to Brabus Germany where the M119 motor was enlarged to 6.5 liters. It is a 450hp / 488 ft lb. torque motor (4 cam / 32 valve). This is the only official USA W210 6.5 in existence. Car was fully optioned when it was built. This includes full Brabus power-train, Brabus (Alcon) ft and rr brakes, Brabus full exhaust, Brabus full body kit, Brabus staggered modular wheels, Brabus Mastik leather interior, Brabus hood / trunk badging and trunk lettering, Brabus springs / shocks, Brabus door sills in stainless, Brabus steering wheel etc.

Car has roughly 40,900 original miles and is in excellent condition in all respects. Car is 040 black non-metallic with Black and contrasting Gray interior. There is a large integrated stereo that is aftermarket but period 1997-98. Car was featured in Motor Trend and an original copy of the magazine is included. This car was built at the time to be the fastest sedan in existence. It held this title in the USA as it is capable of 192mph. The only sedan to surpass this M119 6.5 is the Brabus W210 7.3 V-12 (206mph); none of which were imported to the States as they do not comply with USA crash and emissions standards.

This car can be fully verified by the USA Brabus distributor CEC (Claus Ettensberger Corp) in Los Angeles. You are free to call them.

You will notice that the car does not wear the Brabus front spoiler lower extension. I have a brand new, in-box unit that comes with the car. I do not have it installed, as my driveway is too steep with it in place.

What an opportunity and talk about rare! Can you imagine what the total cost of this conversion had to cost? A true MB collectors piece that deserves a good home. Good luck on the sale John,

1994 Mercedes E500 with 46996 miles

Thanks to reader Peter for spotting this super clean E500 in the brilliant silver paint scheme. Everything about this car looks practically new and well maintained. Unlike a lot of 500Es this one looks totally unmolested down to the original rims. The owner still has the original window sticker, all the manuals, service history, etc.. The buy-it-now price of $26,900 for a 500E in this shape will seem very reasonable in a few years. Right now I’d say it is bit high, with a few less miles it wouldn’t be a surprise to sell at that price though. If you could negotiate it down a bit and this car truly is as clean in person this would be a nice find.

1973 Mercedes-Benz 280C

The W114/W115 Mercedes models were the first of a new generation, as this chassis was not based on any model preceding it. While the model itself is over 40 years old, you still see plenty of these cars around the world, some of which are still employed as taxis, even. The coupe version of the W114/W115 was not a well known Mercedes-Benz model, but it has that timeless grace that all Mercedes coupes embody. Here we have a very clean example with an unusual color combination.

The seller states:

Dark Olive(291) with special ordered Green Leather, 53k original as per last 20 years of records, one CA owner through Jan 2010, delivered new on 9/9/1973, handbooks, data card, tools, superb original interior except replacement front seat trim, perfect wood, Cold AC, much recent reconditioning, new blackwall tires/shocks(originals were still on the car!) just installed, fabulous paint depth and gloss, much original paint, flawless original trunk area, a wonderful and respectable entry level classic Mercedes, we’ll be taking care of detail and refinement issues such as bumper alignment etc.

While eBay doesn’t list it, the seller is asking $12,900 over on the Mercedes Heritage website. Barring the slightly dated interior color, this is a masterpiece of an original owner vehicle. While it would be kind of blasphemous, with it’s recent servicing, this car could be pressed into service and last for a good many more years. Remember, this is the predecessor of the infamous W123 Mercedes, and we all know that car was tougher than a $2.00 steak.

German marques well represented in Watkins Glen.

Having just returned from my annual “business trip” to the Glenora Wine Cellars, formerly Zippo, U.S. Vintage Grand Prix and Racing Festival in Watkins Glen New York I thought it would be appropriate to give you a taste of some of the German metal out on display. In the next couple of days I’ll put up some posts of several of the German street and race cars that I came across for sale while cruising the garage and paddock. Over the course of the weekend I saw all the major marques we cover, except one, represented racing on the track and though there wasn’t one racing, an Opel GT was prowling the car corral. If you ever find yourself near the Fingerlakes region of New York early in September put this event on your calendar. It continues to be one of the largest vintage racing events in the country seeing between 400 and 500 of the finest and funkiest vintage and modern classic racers zooming around the birth place of road racing in America. Here is a  small look at a few of the German machines:

The fast included:

1. a legendary 2000 Audi R8 that turned the fastest time of all competitors with ease.
2. a pair of BMW CSL racers looking and sounding fantastic.
3. a pair of serious M powered Formula cars.
4. a new 2011 Mercedes SLS, parked next to an equally fast Ferrari 599, I overheard someone say both cars were for sale.
5. Speaking of fast and Ferrari, the Audi S4 pictured in this photo can be seen leading a Ferrari 355 challenge. When the rains came Sunday the Audi took control garnering a second place overall in its class race. Despite a fogged windshield, due to non functioning defroster, the Audi left the Ferrari far behind in a roar of turbo whine and quattro powered rain plumes.
6-7.Audi wasn’t the only German with a quest to beat up on Ferrari, note the badge on the rear of this mean sounding Mercedes 190E 2.3-16V. Unfortunately for this Merc it finished back in the pack unceremoniously being out driven by the likes of a 4 door Peugeot 505.

The funny included:
8-9. Some of the amusing Porsche badges on the Pirate Racing team.
10.a Mercedes 190E M sport.
11. a BMW 323i with a bumper sticker describing how it feels being out on the track.

The doesn’t fit in any category:
14. a Vixen 21 BMW powered motorhome. These are extremely rare, 100 MPH RVs. Around 500 total were built and I suspect that combining the words high-speed and motorhome has resulted in far fewer surviving today. Ironically Jalopnik posted a picture of one just yesterday in a post about “Automotive Unicorns”. This one looked every bit like it came straight out of the movie Blade Runner. Very cool.

Early production 1968 Mercedes-Benz 300SEL 6.3

The 6.3 is one of those vehicles that changed the makeup of an entire automaker’s lineup for good. Developed by MB engineer Erich Waxenberger and thrust into production in 1968, the S class with the M100 became an instant legend on the road and track. AMG, a small tuning company at the time, even campaigned a few 6.3s, taking second place at 24 Hours of Spa in 1971. Here we have an early production 6.3 that has been well preserved:

Owned in my personal collection for many years. With great regret I am offering my favorite sedan. This is the original super sedan that started the concept of high performance AMG sports sedans. This car is an early US model build #64 from the assembly line. It is a rare Black on Black color combination. Paint code 040.

This car was previously owned by 2 owners and kept in its original condition and stored indoors. There is no rust or prior accident damage. The trunk, rockers and floor pans are excellent. See pics below. Fit and finish of body is excellent. Paint and Chrome are excellent. Car is complete and everything works. The air suspension is excellent and has been sorted out. It has new bellows and air valves. Just replaced the tires and they have about 200 miles or less. All radiator hoses, transmission seals, and various gaskets replaced. New antenna. New suspension cable. New ignition, plugs and cold start valve. New fuel pump. New fuel sending unit. Drain and cleaned fuel tank. New brakes and front calipers. New battery and frequent oil changes.

Leather and carpets are original and in excellent shape. Wood is excellent. All electrical is working properly and factory AC blows cold. Includes original owners manuals and original tool kit. I will also include a reproduction Mercedes brochure for the 300SEL 6.3.

Bidding is low at the moment and of course there is a reserve, but this particular example should have no problem pulling at least $25,000, if not into the $30k range.

Another Mercedes Renntech SL74, really?

We have seen three of these Renntech SL74 beasts show up for sale this summer, which is pretty unbelievable. Our previous finds:

Sometimes an owner will see another seller claiming to have a really rare car and take the opportunity to show of his own to show the other guy he isn’t the only one. Sometimes following up one rare listing with another lets a seller piggy back on some of the excitement or the initial sale or lets them judge interest or gauge market value. Perhaps that’s the case with this third SL74.
This one is a 1996 in white found by reader Nik. It is a bit more showy than the other two we saw this year. Chromed intakes, vented hood, embroidered logo headrests, big sound system in the trunk, etc. The specs are right inline with the other two we’ve seen. The seller quotes an investment of over $200,000 and lists the upgrades as follows:

With a day left this one is up to just under $17,000 reserve not met. The Buy-It-Now price is $28,900. As with the others I’ll say this again, that is a heck of a lot of depreciation. Unlike the others though this one has actually seen substantial use at 91,000 miles. That’s nice to see.
